Hello!

Just a question, for Prelim HSC Bio.

Wikipedia says that Aerobic Respiration produces only 38 ATP however, in Bio in Focus, it states that Aerobic Respiration only produces 36 ATP.

So.... which one should I trust?

I'd say it can produce between 36-38 ATP.

The reason is given in your wikipedia page, that is because at one stage 4 or 6 ATP can be produced.

Also says that merely 36 ATP is produced, so you should probably use BIO in focus as your reference, as if you are marked wrong you can validate your answer with the textbook, and get the mark back.

Well, I just wanted to know what Yr12's did when they probably found this 'mistake'.

I also wanted to know which source they trusted.

Because if you read carefully, you would notice that my question is merely a question asking about the reliability of sources...

Bio in focus is a decently good textbook. I've flipped through it (just cause I dropped bio in Yr 11 doesn't mean I lost ALL of my interest for it).

Those at my school used Heinmann biology. It was a painful read for me.

The fact is that every textbook has a con hiding somewhere. It might be a small one though.

Don't fully quote me. I only flipped through the textbook as an ex-biology student. I never made it to Yr 12 to give my formal verdict on it.

(Here's the thing - I used physics in focus)

You do realise he just gave you the better suggestion of using multiple textbooks...

But BIF. Because Heinmann was just boring to look at for me.

38 is the theoretical value

OKAY!

For any of you Bio-lovers out there, Aerobic Respiration nearly always produces 38 ATP..

Why?

1. 34 from the Electron Transport Chain.
2. 2 from the Kreb's Cycle.
3. 2 from Glycolysis.
Hence, 34 +2 + 2 = 38.

Therefore, Aerobic Respiration produces 38 ATP.

There are a few exceptions however, I'm not sure of them...
