Well isn't it just the change in climate due to continental drift have meant natural selection favoured some characteristics and allowed them to survive to reproduce. Those who could survive the harsher, more arid environments and the decline in water availability, etc did so. eg eucalypt forest replaced rainforests that used to dominate australia..
