Hi I’m confused if anyone could help me out on this it would be appreciated
Is bachelor of liberal arts and science at usyd a double degree in arts/science? other Unis just call it a Bachelor of Arts/science but there is no degree called that at usyd, so I assumed this was the same thing but under a different name
But … some people are saying it’s super watered down and is made for people with low atars who want to go to usyd, but there’s no other degree which combines art and science?

USyd's Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science is a single degree. This can be confirmed by considering the length of the degree, which is 3 years, compared to 4+ years in the case of a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts. USyd does not appear to offer a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts double degree program, unlike other universities. Instead, it somehow combines both fields into a single degree, by allowing students to choose a major from either the arts or science discipline, as well as offering core liberal studies units.

Since the degree combines the arts and science disciplines, this means that there is a large number of majors that students can choose from. In total, USyd offers 100+ majors for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science.

The main advantage of this degree seems to be the shorter duration. However, this would likely be at the expense of some learning, which can otherwise be achieved in the additional year of a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts. It is therefore important to consider whether you prefer to minimise the duration of your university studies, or whether this is not a concern for you. If the latter applies, you should perhaps consider the more conventional, equivalent double degree options, which are offered by most other universities, including UNSW, WSU, MQ, UoW and UoN.

oh ok yes that makes a lot of sense, thank you! just a follow up question - what the difference between the regular blas degree and blas (advanced)? theres a huge jump in atar for guaranteed entry, from 70 to 95, so if i went for the advanced version could that possibly help the fact that it's not actually a double degree and might have limited learning prospects?

No worries! The Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Advanced) is a specialised stream within the standard Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science. It is intended for students who are completing a major in science specifically, and is aimed at developing skills needed for postgraduate study and research. This definitely increases the learning that can be achieved and makes it more all-rounded. However, in such a case, whether you will benefit from enrolling in the Advanced stream will depend on whether you intend to undertake further study, especially in research (such as an Honours year).
