single blood donation can help save 3 lives. So, if it has been 12
weeks
since your last donation or you have never given blood, please give
blood
this week and help ensure there is enough blood and blood products for
those
who need it. Australia needs 20,000 donations every week to meet the
needs
of hospital patients. Here are the details of the mobile visit to
Macquarie
University...

**************************************************
MOBILE BLOOD SERVICE

Thu 2 November, 10.00am - 3.00pm

No appointment required and new donors are welcome (so bring a friend)
**************************************************
Please bring identification (preferably your donor card or photo ID)

Please consume at least 3 glasses of juice or water and a good-sized
meal in
the hours before donating. More information is available below (just
scroll
down) about what to do on the day of your donation. If you have any
questions call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au

You can also donate blood at one of our donor centres (Sydney CBD,
Chatswood, Parramatta, Nepean or Liverpool). Open every business day
and
some Saturdays. Call 13 14 95 for an appointment.

Thank you on behalf of those whose lives you save.

I would love to give blood, but my fear of all things needle-related/sharp pain related is truly shocking :( I shriek at something so small as a pinprick blood sample or even that tiny meningecoccal shot... :(

Has anyone else been THIS scared before and still gone through with a blood donation? Got any tips/advice for people like me who really want to donate blood but are petrified of it at the same time?

I was hate needles. Before giving blood, the last needle I had had was when I was 7 and the tetnus shot isnt the most happy memory. I gave blood cause it needs to be done. When it comes down to it, it doesnt take very long. It can hurt, but usually doesnt. The pin prick of the iron level tester they give you before you donate often is more of a shock.

They used to let friends go with you if you were nervous, but due to people fainting, they did away with that. I gave 3 times at uni, and collapsed badly the last 2 times and they banned me from doing it again. This is not common, so dont let it freak you out. It is just that if you are in a position to donate, you should try. That is all that can be asked. You can do it Lynn! I believe in you!

The cracked the shits last time I gave and people where there. The first time I went, they let people sit next to you, but after that they cracked down on it and said no more, cause the friends kept passing out. It was gay. Maybe we just got some anal people that day.

oh my god

Um, ok let's say that hypothetically, I give blood on monday. Will I still be able to drive around and stuff afterwards? (I need to be able to - have singing lesson in afternoon)

And are the people at the blood bank nice? Will they be accomodating to a person who is REALLY scared and has a history of shrieking really loudly when scared/in pain?

ok guys and gals

I'm actively trying to increase my iron levels now, so they don't turn my blood away for an iron deficiency. Unless I chicken out between now and monday, I'm going to give blood! :)

*continues nibbling on duck pate* :p

Glitterfairy, did you end up giving blood?

I gave last wednesday only took about 1 hour for the entire process!! the way i see is that one in three will need blood sometime in their life (i have had a close friend who if they didnt have it they wouldnt live) hence why i give blood now as i didnt previously!

Anne - its not a bad thing blood transfusions, - out of curiosity why dont you believe in it, as they save lives and the chances of any problems arising from a blood transfusion are almost minimal with the technology and screening they do before they do the transfer

yes I did end up giving blood! :D Mine only took about an hour too, maybe less (not many people when I went there)

I squealled pretty loudly twice (first when they took the iron test, second when they put the needle in, and then a short one when they took it out) but glad I did it. I sms'd my mum afterwards, she called me back immediately after having shown her work friends my sms, she was so excited! lol

I can't say I've known anyone who really needed blood, but it's an excellent cause nonetheless, and if you can help save someone's life, why not? :)
