Borders (Parramatta) is clearly the best book shop ever (since I work there).

Books, CDs, DVDs, mags, etc. You all know the routine.

I'm a sucker for a good bookstore. Kinokuniya, Abbey's and Gleebooks are probably my favourites. While not super cheap the Gleebooks second hand store is great if you're after a discount source of more academically oriented books.

Not necessarily. If you join their Card Club for $15 per year (borrow it off a friend if the discounts won't pay off the price of the card for you, or get a few friends together to chip in a dollar...) you get 10% discount off all books in the store, including Educational titles, putting it a level beyond stores like Dymocks and A&R, where discounts never apply to Educational titles except when the store has a sale, and even then it is quite rare.

i just saw on the gleebooks website that they've opened up a store in blackheath, which i will check out next time i'm up there.

if anyone is ever in glen innes up on the northern tablelands, there is a fantastic second-hand place on the main street. all sorts of great stuff.

There is a very good book shop in Byron Bay (the main streets), i'm unsure of the name but it specialises in old books for low prices and a friend and I found some great bargains there - a lovely set of Tamora Pierce books. If you're passing by for schoolies, it's definitely a place to visit.

There is an absolutely brilliant secondhand bookstore across the road from the Belmore Hotel in Maitland. Also Beaumont Street's Q Books and the other one across from Gloria Jeans are also good.

but why doesn't australian hve those book shops that are also like cafes and you go and snuggle up into a sofa with a hot chocolate and read the books - like those ones in you've got mail

There should be book exchanges around. I think they're pretty popular. Usually you can take a load of books into the store, they'll go through them and pick out the ones which they think will sell and they'll give you a certain amount of money for each book.
It depends on whereabouts in NSW you are. I'd try the yellow pages or the internet for book exchanges near you.

Oh and the great thing about book exchanges is that you can pick up second hand books really cheap as well. I got the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series for less than $10. It was great.

I'm not allowed to buy stuff online so I usually buy books from Kinokuniya or Boarders, second hand bookshops (Newtown is great + opposite the road to next in list) and Kings Comics (for comics obviously).

For anyone who lives in the Sutherland Shire area, in Sydney, The Book Station at Caringbah is certainly worth a look. It's second hand, so oftentimes it's difficult to find a particular book and, if you find it, it might not be the best quality. But they're super friendly, and they have a cafe and a small lounge area that you can snuggle up in, and all of their books are sorted very well, something I don't find often in second hand stores. You can trade in old books of your own for store credit, too.

The only other problem I can think of is their dog, Basil. He's not in there very often, and while he's super friendly and calm and doesn't leave his designated area often, he would make the store a no-go for anyone afraid of or allergic to dogs.

a few people have mentioned elizabeth's at newtown..
maybe i'm just a poverty-stricken hsc student (aren't we all)
or maybe i'm just asian..
but i find the books there a tad expensive? i've even found cheaper versions of the same book in BORDERS! (my gosh! i know?!)
and a lot of the time i can't even find what i'm looking for there.

i have a couple of local second-hand bookstores/book-exchanges i visit regularly ('dog-eared books' and 'the readers realm') with most good reads at $6 or under...$8 at the most (but the 8 buck ones are nice and fancy and in pretty good condition)
parklea markets has a pretty good second-hand bookstore (the name of it has escaped my mind) but they have absolute bargains and a wide collection too.

if you're cheap like me, i've found many of my books at vinnies or salvos, usually 2 bucks each (but it's a pain in the butt looking through their jumbled stacks of books). or even at the library when they're having a clearout, i bought catch-22 for 50c.

but, i do love that second-hand bookstore in newtown...the one with stacks and stacks and stacks of books everywhere...it's like a maze, and has two levels as well i forget what it's called...but you could be reading a book in there and no one will ever find you.

I've only been to the one in Paddington though. But I love it. All the second hand and antique books are upstairs and there's a little cafe and everything.

I usually just go to Kino in TGV to find any books of interest and then buy them off The Book Depository. Much cheaper, and free shipping.

In terms of vintage books, I like Gould Books in Newtown. It's open until 11pm!
