malkin was referring to people stepping in front of trains in order to commit suicide and of the stress and grief that would follow.
It's not a problem in Singapore and I don't see why the situation would be any different here. I'm all for unmanned automatic trains.

*cough* forgetting something?

Where is the money going to come from to pay for the new infrastructure / trains etc?

Also mr_shittles you say
The government should also scrap land tax and payroll tax whilst they are at it and pour a few billion dollars more into the rail network.
Scapping the taxes would reduce government revenues, but yet you propose government expenditure rise?

That's a good point. I guess NSW has to run a few budget defecits. You have to remember that NSW has less debt on its balance sheet that most other states (as a % of GSP). I think given the fact that NSW is going backwards, its might be worth pushing the budget into the red for a few years.

The second point is that for every dollar of tax paid in NSW to the Howard government, it gets back around 80 cents. I'm sure if the government really turned up the heat on John Howard (ie. launched TV and radio campaigns for "educational" purposes), he would be more willing to put money back into NSW, where it belongs.

It is very important to remember that since Howard is the highest taxing government, the morwe tax that is collected, the more money NSW bleeds. In fact, at no time in Australia's history has NSW been paying more to subsidies other states.

No... Lowering taxes does NOT reduce government revenues...

Morris Iemma seems like a real worry for the ALP to me. Very quiet....hardly anyone has probably heard of him before the past few days. He just seems to quiet to be a leader/premier, Brogden will eat him alive. I thought up until now the ALP had a better than even chance of winning the next election...now I think they definantly have a less than 50% chance. They really should have gone with Carl Scully.

eaten alive by Brogden? give the guy a chance. it seems like everytime i see Brogden on the news, he's always whinging. i never see him in any sort of positive attitude.

Brogden would be the least of my worries. All he does is yap and whine, I think most people would be used to it by now.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/iemma-to-abolish-vendor-tax/2005/08/02/1122748606131.html

Property vendor duty will be abolished under the leadership of incoming NSW Premier Morris Iemma.

Mr Iemma made the announcement after being formally elected as the state's 40th premier at a Labor caucus meeting today.

He said the new law would not be retrospective.

Mr Iemma will also become the state's next treasurer, when he is sworn in to both jobs tomorrow.
Long live the NSW Labor Right!

Combining the offices of Premier and Treasurer! Does anyone else feel like Hindenburg just died?

Iemma intends to be both Pmier and Treasurer whilst at the same time 'having the weekends available to spend with his family'...

...somehow I think that one of those responsiblities will be compromised...

No, but maybe hand the treasury responsibilities to someone else who is not pre-occupied with an enormous level of immediate commitments....

I don't think he should comment on the issue either way... just say "It'll be hard but I'm going to try to balance my family commitments with my important commitment to the state".

It wasn't the wisest to say he's going to have weekends off... But I imagine the media men have gotten to him now :)

Yet another reign of spin has begun... is it just me or does it appear as though Iemma actually 'won' the election...

The sweeping statements declaring that the transport, health, taxes and the like will be reformed or revamped, is a mere admission that the government has not done what it was elected to do...

I said it once and I'll say it again...Iemma is a new leader, not a new government...
