Dear Student,

Are you interested in improving your presentation skills? Are you
interested in meeting people from other cultures?

Macquarie International is currently recruiting student buddies to
assist with orientation for international students in Semester 2 2006.
The buddy program will give you an opportunity to meet interesting
people from all over the world and make a difference in the life of an
international student.

Buddies assist international students during orientation and their
first few weeks at Macquarie - helping students to sign up for
orientation and providing information about activities. You will be
involved in the presentation of essential information and the
implementation of the social activities program. There will be
opportunities to develop your presentation, communication and
leadership skills. You will also receive a free t-shirt, certificate
of participation, a Co-op book voucher and discounted tickets to social
events. Some Buddies can also attend day trips for free!

You need to be available for training on Monday 3 July. If you are not
available please do not apply. You will also need to be available for at
least 4 days during the period of Monday 17 - Friday 21 July from
9am-5pm.

Skills required to be a student buddy include:
* Friendly
* Strong oral communication skills
* Can demonstrate leadership skills
* Works well in group situations
* Strong knowledge of the university campus and services offered

Application forms are available at the Front Desk , Level 1 Building
E3A.
Please complete and return the form by Friday 16 June 2006 to
kim.carmody@io.mq.edu.au or fax to 9850 7733 or submit to the Front
Desk, Level 1 E3A .

Look forward to receiving your application!

I know someone here has done it - what did they think?

When they say you have to be available 9 - 5, does that mean you have to be in the uni 9 - 5 and go when you can, or you miss your lectures/tutes for the week and spend 9-6 with the new students?

realise this is the buddy program, not meet a mate @ mac
you won't have just 1 student to look after, you do more general duties (presentations, enrolments etc)
if you want 1 student to look after then do the meet a mate @ mac, i'd guess you probably get preferance for the nationality of the student

Meet a Mate = 3/4 people as well, and the involvement is usually the same. This one just rewards you more, and looks like the MaM program more structured.

Did this, though it was in teh summer so it wasnt ALL that flash, a lot of "asians". But it was good, and free stuff, expect to eat a lot of pizza =D , and of course a few interesting ppl hehe
There were "international" lunches as well, but you "had" to be asian to get to eat the asian food and mingle with asian ppl, and stuff like that.
You might find some stuff repetitive, like the presentations, and filling in forms, but hey what do i know, it might be completely different for the winter!
