Hi Bored of Studies Community!

Are you interested in pursuing medicine as a career path? Do you think you like the idea of medicine, but aren't sure how life as a medical student/ doctor would actually be? Are you concerned about the (rather complex) application process?

I'm a medical student at the University of New South Wales and a few months ago, with a few young doctors in training, I started a not-for-profit organisation called Aspire Mentoring, that aims to help those of you who potentially see medicine as a career path.

We aim to show you what real medicine is like through our hands-on workshops. We hope that for some of you, these workshops will turn a potential interest in the field of medicine, a passion to study medicine. One month ago we ran our first surgical simulation workshop, where high school students came and learnt how to conduct simple surgical techniques on a chicken model. (Please see our facebook page for photos: https://www.facebook.com/AspireMentoring)

Understanding that a strong medical application requires community service experience, we have started some Community Service Projects with positions available for volunteering. We are sending sports equipment to Uganda, helping to fund the building of a school in Cambodia, amongst other grass roots community initiatives. These projects have been designed to allow your participation as volunteers and as leaders within your community, experience that will be invaluable when considering your future careers and submitting future applications.

We also review medical applications and provide mentoring to those of you who are uncertain on the application process.

For those of you who are passionate to pursue medicine as a career, we aim to be there for you in whatever capacity you need us to be. Please feel free to drop us an email at mentoring.aspire@gmail.com or give us a call at 0408272072. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with our latest events and breaking medical news: https://www.facebook.com/AspireMentoring

Just to reiterate, we are not a commercial business, we are a not-for-profit organisation that donates all proceeds to our community service projects!

Great concept as many high school students don't understand what medicine is and it is awesome to see you give back to the community. That being said workshop is only a small reflection of what medicine encompasses. Good Luck!

So you're going to have a station for every specialty?

I completely disagree with this idea of "I need to volunteer for my application to medicine."
If someone wants to volunteer because they believe it's a good thing to do and naturally want to give up their time to do these things then that's going to look better than someone who did volunteering through a med-entrance company and obviously only did it to get in.

Apart from those points I think this place is alright.

Thank you so much for the feedback.

@Medman, yes we completely agree, suturing and dissecting is a very small aspect of medicine. However, it is a different aspect of medicine that many high school students wouldn't be exposed to. There is sometimes an assumption made by high school students that medicine is a completely academic field. This workshop was designed to show students that there are aspects of medicine that rely on good fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The more aspects of medicine you are exposed to before you make the final decision to pursue it as a career, the better we feel!

@Riproot, we completely agree with you. We do not advocate doing community service just for the sake of a line on your resume/ medical application. However, what I do know is that high school students often find it difficult to find stimulating volunteering opportunities, if any opportunities at all. Yet, closely tied with the desire to study medicine is the desire to help the community and those less fortunate than you. How will a high school student know that they have this desire if they are not exposed to appropriate volunteering opportunities?

I know for a fact that I, myself, only became passionate about pursuing community service after my first placement at a school for the intellectually-disabled.

We also interview every student who wants to volunteer with our organisation to ensure they are joining our team for the right reasons!
