Hi, I'm in year 12 and doing business studies as one of my subjects and i'm wondering how many different businesses i should do for the case study cause I'm worried I'm not going to remember all of them by the time trials and HSC hits. Also what do i write in each syllabus dot point, is it just 'thing that business did that's related to the syllabus dot point' + 'stats' + 'effects'? Currently I have a conglomeration of different companies like maccas, qantas, nike, walmart, ikea.

Including 2-3 real-life business examples is generally considered appropriate, although the number of businesses that you explore in your response is not as important as the quality of the information used from your case study material and the extent to which it supports your main points. There are instances where you may be able to discuss a separate business per main point, but there are also instances where case study material for one business can help you support more than one of your main points. For example, in a response covering a main point under the marketing topic (for example, advertising) and another main point under the operations topic (for example, environmental sustainability), you may find that discussing a business like Apple can help you support both points.

Regarding your other question, you seem to be on the right track. When taking case study notes against the syllabus dot points, you can list names of businesses with case study material relevant to particular syllabus dot points, followed by notes summarising the main information for each business which, as you mentioned, can include statistics/figures and effects/outcomes. It is good that you are already focusing on five different businesses, and you can always expand your list through research if you feel a particular syllabus dot point may require case study material relevant to a different business.

I hope this helps! 😄

what would you say is the best business to do for each KBF. I am planning to do the one that we learn in class + my own one. So far, in marketing I have done Apple and mcdonalds for operations as my own study. What do you recommend for finance and hr?

My teacher is doing a niche business for all 4 kbfs as she says that every other school is doing the popular ones and that your response won't stand out. But which other business/es have the most information for finance and hr?

Hi,
I also had a question?
How would you recommend memorising case studies for my business std HSC. Take like each dot point and associate a case study for it? Im really confused as to how to prepare case studies for an unknown essay question? Id appreciate any advice

To make a case study, you associate a real-life example with each dotpoint, and is usually done as one business for all/each kbfs. I have also seen some schools have multiple businesses per kbf, as each dotpoint correlates to a different business, but just do what your school wants. But you also usually do not create your own case study and just use one from your school or from online.

For memorising, you would typically use active recall, either in the form of flashcards, or the best way, to practice (more ways but these are most common). With case studies, you would generally complete a section of the content and do some practice questions.

For an unknown question, you just have to know your content and do a bunch of practice. You have to answer the question in terms of a theoretical sense (e.g. using advertising as a promotional strategy allows businesses to... leading to... increased market share) and then a real-life application. (e.g. Apple's 'Shot on iPhone' marketing campaign demonstrated the iPhone's camera capabilities...led to increased awareness... increased market share)

This is what i was taught from not only my teacher but also from ppl on BoS, and it worked for task 1 at my school. However, I am still studying business rn so take this with a grain of salt.

You can use Qantas and Google for both finance and HR. Qantas has had (and continues to have) issues with its employees and their union relating to layoffs, a recent example being head office staff being laid off. At the same time, the layoffs, which Qantas explains as redundancies, have contributed to a substantial increase in profits. Depending on the syllabus dot point, this provides an opportunity to establish a link between Qantas and the finance topic.

Google is generally considered a good business example for HR, with examples including a more participative/delegative leadership style, allowing its employees a great degree of freedom to showcase their creativity and maximise their performance, thereby building on a recruitment process that focuses on recruiting top talent. Google is also able to reduce its costs by means such as advertising. For example, Google can advertise its products on YouTube at no costs, since YouTube is a subsidiary of YouTube (this can also be useful for marketing).

There is no issue with selecting niche businesses, although there is also no issue with focusing on well-known businesses. Ultimately, the quality of the response is the most important element. If the main points cover the relevant content well with reference to the appropriate syllabus dot points, and if the main points are appropriately supported by relevant business case study material, then the response will be of good quality, regardless of the specific case studies used.

blackaragorn provides good tips. If your school requires you to use specific case studies, then you can stick to those for your internal assessment tasks/exams and avoid including hypothetical case study material in your responses.

However, you are free to discuss whichever real-life business you wish in the HSC exam, as long as the information provided is relevant and helps you support your main points. Discussing hypothetical case studies is an option, although I would personally recommend only using this as a backup in case of a complete mind blank, as the data/information from a real-life case study will always be more reliable than hypothetical information, which is also less time-efficient, especially if it is being thought of on the spot.
