Our whole life revolves somewhat around numbers: your mortgage; how and how much you'll pay for the car; the interest you get from your term deposit.

But we don't exactly need to know how to treat deferred taxes or hire-purchase agreements to thrive in the business world.

yeah, there's a difference between dealing with numbers and dealing with actual maths. Accounting is heavy on numbers (well, financial acct anyway) but there is hardly any maths or difficult formulas, it's just adding and subtracting really. Unlike, econometrics, economics, finance etc.
Yeah good point, I'm always puzzled when on those careers sites they say that if you enjoy or are good at maths do Accounting. like wtf?

Also, dude01, how can you say you don't want to do maths yet be interested in Marketing? That involves a lot of maths and statistics and number crunching. Marketing 101 isn't the full story so I'd be wary if you are unable to face maths.

er...are you sure thats correct? lol...

Anyway, its not like the other subjects teach anything groundbreaking in their first years.
Using your generalisation - What did we learn in Economics? That when prices go up...wait for it...demand goes down! lets go get a Nobel Prize!

How about Finance - Simple Interest Rate is where interest is not added to the Principal for interest calculating purposes...yay...

Stats - to calculate the mean, you add up the results and divide by the number of observations...

Well, obviously not in first year but when picking majors it's important to know what you're getting yourself into in later years.

I cant speak for everyone here, but I know I learnt more than supply and demand principles, quite a bit more. :)

Yeah, my finance subjects arent that challenging [at the moment].

Chose not to do stat. Instead, did Econometrics. Tested my ability to interpret broken english [engrish] language.

though I usually defend Accounting but I admit the coursework is very poorly structured, in my uni as well as in others I've seen.

but I guess because Accounting is so complex that its hard to know where to start.

When I did Accounting last year, it was just learning heaps of theory and processes for me, its not until 2nd year at least that you start to realise...OH thats the point of accounting.

To tell you the truth I looked it up on wikipedia before posting, as I can't even remember anymore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-Entry_Booking).
sorry i was just joking

ok when I said I didn't want to do anything with maths, what I meant was anything that is based on mathematical ability (i.e accounting and finance).

Also, dude01, how can you say you don't want to do maths yet be interested in Marketing? That involves a lot of maths and statistics and number crunching. Marketing 101 isn't the full story so I'd be wary if you are unable to face maths.
I know there is some maths in marketing, but most of the course has nothing to do with maths (by looking at the subjects for the marketing major). I'll be ok if I need to use some maths, but a subject like accounting or finance is too much.

yeah, there's a difference between dealing with numbers and dealing with actual maths. Accounting is heavy on numbers (well, financial acct anyway) but there is hardly any maths or difficult formulas, it's just adding and subtracting really. Unlike, econometrics, economics, finance etc.
I do agree with that. Maybe I'm just blaming maths for my failure to grasp accounting concepts. Since year 12 I've had an ongoing grudge against maths because I got a mark of 5/50 for a maths test, HAHA! It still haunts me to this day...

ANYWAYS... this was an interesting discussion lol. I'm gonna do HR or management. NO MATHS AT ALL!

But I'll be double majoring with marketing. There's heaps of jobs in marketing (not as much as accounting or finance, but still lots...)

dude01, I sucked at maths in yr 12 and still do but there is no stopping anyone from grasping accounting if you can just wince through the utter boredom and do the work. I went into acct thoroughly miserable and wary of the numbers but get past the horrible mundanity of it and it's fine.

Pure arithmetic calculations in accounting is not maths. It's spreadsheet/calulator work. Although in uni you had to work everything by hand, in the real world you just do it through a Excel so it's a piece of cake. No need to fret :D

Jobs in business that require you to use maths/have some mathematical intuition - trader, quant, stats analyst, actuary.

Though in trading, quant, stats, actuarial work you use excel, access and VB anyway...maybe a bit of C...

I've always believed that any person who goes into Finance will end up knowing Excel better than Microsoft's own programmers lol

nah dont lose faith in maths cause of that, in Yr 12 Specialist I got 8/55 for a test : P but ended up ok for the subject...(ok fine I didn't recover well...but anyway...the point is you can still recover. I managed to pass it and get above 35 at least...)

Serious? Fuck! That rules out economics then, anything with maths I refuse to do.

Yeh ibus does sound very interesting, but at the same time useless in getting a job, which puts me off...

I need something that is interesting and useful in getting a job, but isn't maths based! Dammit... I think I'm just gonna do HR even though it doesn't really complement marketing. It's the only major which is interesting, not maths based and is actually useful in a job.
International business has many jobs on offer..

ESPECIALLY with the government... mainly the Australian Trade Commission and possibly the Foreign Affairs department... and there is always Export companies and Multinational companies..

people wont give u a job just because you have an IBUS major, a 2nd language would probably be more useful or an understanding of politics
