People who are good/enjoy business studies - what do you plan to do after HSC?

Do you want to work in the management of a large company?

or

Start your own small business?

how do u intend to go about this?

How much weight does a business degree from uni carry as far as gettting jobs for big companies later on?

Its not like you can just get a Bachelor of Business Admin and then walk into being a brand manager for something like Coca Cola Amatil?

Its more about making relationships and kissing bosses asses isnt it?

If you were going to make your own small business,would you do a business degree at uni? Or would u put more emphasis on the study/experience of what your business will be e.g. Real Estate Traineeship --> Open your own agency down the line...

I think it's a bit of it all. Like when I did business studies it does give you alot of background knowledge about the business world. However, if you wanted to get further knowledge and really understand business or admistration etc then you would go and do a degree.

There are alot of people out there who didn't go to uni and just from having alot of work experience ended up surviving in the business world. The more experience you get the more you are likely to survive situations etc etc.

Like business studies is not a prerequisite for any business degree (as far as I know), however it does help a little to know these things from high school. The equations and stuff you use in business studies like current ratio, gearing ratio blah blah you don't really revise and go over them in uni. It's more in depth and detailed than what you learn in high school.

Also, lets say you are doing a business degree you can always get a job in line with your degree through uni. There are always people out there who will help you find a job, there are companies that work with uni's to recruit students for part time work. Later, if you are successful then they may hire you in the company.

Business studies is just the beginning, it's like background knowledge. I think it's a combination of experience and education that will get you into the business world successfully.

yeah im currently doing business studies and after my hsc im planning to go to uni (if i get in ><*) to do a commerce degree maybe for marketing? i havent really decided though as i still feel really lost.

Im planning to do a B Commerce, with a major in Commercial/Business Law.
Economics is my passion, but i dont like the constrained nature of career paths that pertain to that.

WHile the HSC courses probally give you no significant advantage at uni, they give the general gist of the subject area, and the very basics. Business studies was a good course in that it gave you a look at each of the key areas of business (marketing, E.R, Accounting etc etc) much of which are majors in the Commerce degree. It probally did help me choose my focus for later on.

The course i sincerely believe will help those who will eventually open a small business, and i hope it will help reduce the high failure rate of small business in Australia. While it could go into more detail in some respects, it does provide a basic framework for business creation and success, which is better than no knowledge at all.

I'm heading for a Commerce degree this year, and I'm sure Business Studies will give me a foundation for uni. I've been quite interested in Commerce since around Yr 9, so Eco and Biz were interesting subjects for me. As for the future: my aspiration is to get a position in Finance, hopefully at a large firm like Macq or Goldman Sachs but who knows?? lol.

I loved business studies at school. And now i'm doing a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and im telling you now, if i hadn't done Business studies for the HSC, i would be SO screwed by now. they just race through stuff at uni and i feel so incredibly sorry for anyone who didnt do business studies at school in my course.

Its funny you mentiong Business Admin.

BBA Degrees are now the hot item in the business world

The reason is because they simply tend to provide better candidates than the alternatives (i.e. commerce or bach of business). Commerce degrees are often really specialised and one dimensional, i.e. accounting or finance, and tend to get lots of people with no interpersonal or leadership skills. As stereotypical as this sounds, it is very true. Ive worked in HR, and there is a common stigma assosciated with people from non english speaking backgrounds. And I have to say this is justified, as they often lack the interpersonal skills.

The fact with modern business students is that unless you are doing something like accounting or finance which is very specialised, the skills you need are defined by you as a person, not the marks you've acquired. Marks are an indicator of performance and motivation, but employers care more about your skills as a person than they necessarily do as a "degree holder". And this is why BBA degrees have outshined commerce degrees in recent times.
