I'm glad my old posts are still helpful even today :)

And usually the point of the cadetship is to do full time work, and fit your study around it. I think this concept is quite foreign for people who are coming out of high school/first year uni where education was always the main focus but a cadetship is really just a full time job, with an allowance/appreciation that you need some extra leave/support to enable you to complete your relevant studies.
Yeah starting to comprehend that concept ahahah. Although one of my friends was saying I should be doing uni full-time with full-time work and just do night classes although is that even possible?

It's possible (I did this for some of my degree) but I would wait until you're very comfortable with what you're doing both at work and with your studies. It requires a lot of self-discipline and autonomy, and this is hard to achieve until you know what you're doing. It's also extremely draining and you will need to make some sacrifices to make it work. I was fortunate in that the girl I was dating at the time also had a very heavy study load (and a clerkship) so we both had plenty of commitments, and even when we were hanging out together on a Friday night, it often involved me working on the laptop and she would study for uni.

Yeah for sure, it seems very intense to work 40+ hours and week and then switch gears to an additional 20+ hours a week off study. And I've come to terms with the social sacrifice, its fun to hang out but it isn't something I need for my type of personality, and I'm sure I'll get plenty of socialising in at work anyway, they have their weekly outings and monthly social events so that's enough for me.
I'll use your advice and settle into work for a year and then if I can manage I'll switch to full time otherwise I'll just take it slow. The major bummer for me is that I'm gonna miss out on sleep and I hate missing out on sleep ahahaha, but I guess that's what weekends are for!

Depending on which firm you are at, the unfortunate reality is that those "40+ hours" may very well become 80+ hours which makes the remaining 20 that much harder to find... I found having a structured routine including gym, socialising and studying/uni work on weekends helped keep me on top of things when I was doing my cadetship. The cadetship definitely isn't for everyone but I have zero regrets from doing mine and I don't think I would've had the great experiences (I say this non-sarcastically) I've had without it.

Hopefully it doesn't start off too intense, I'm pretty sure I have 2 weeks of training before even officially working so I can use that time to ease in and set up a routine that works for me. I'm keeping myself busy post hsc, so my brain doesn't rot and I become super lazy so it also helps with starting. Also when is busy season and is it really terrible?

Depends which firm.

IMO if you have time before you start, just enjoy yourself and your free time before things actually ramp up. Even getting through training will be a chore since if you're anything like me, it was the first time I had to consistently stay awake and focused for 8 hours. Then once you start work, take it easy before you overburden yourself with signing up for other commitments.

Fair enough, I do have 4 months before work so I'm gonna do all the stuff I've wanted to do and enjoy by then, but I'm just going to learn essential skills before then like learning excel to a proficient level, the other ms packages and google sheets, as well as just gain a deeper general understanding of the auditing field. I'll still have plenty of time to kickback, play games and go out in that time so should be good. And yeah that sounds pretty exhausting, hopefully, I'll be able to adjust quickly. Any other tips or general advice pre and post start?

Hey yall,

When I was applying for cadetships this year I couldn't find a 2019 thread and there wasn't too much info going around for the CURRENT year, so just making this thread for future applicants in 2020 to help in any way I can!
Also if anyone else is up for a discussion about their future cadetship, chuck us a comment and we can have a talk!!!

PS: Would be cool to have an online network, for support, banter, advice or just general discussions with other Cadets! So shoot us a msg!

Just the right attitude will make all the difference.

ps. why google sheets?
I've heard that google sheets is really useful and better in terms of collaboration and sharing a spreadsheet with multiple people than excel, and thought I might as well learn it cause I've got nothing else to do

A cadetship is essentially full time employment for a university student, on the condition they study a degree relavent to their employment. The student benefits through gaining skills and experience in the workplace, and employers are able to train students in the field to suit the roles they need.

It's a great opportunity, because it puts you several years ahead career wise, of students who do not start relevant full time employment before finishing their degree, helps you really develop and grow into a work environment, can give you the practical element your studies lack, and most (obviously) importantly for all the high school kids who apply for these roles, you get paid a very good salary for somebody with no experience! -

AFAIK barely anyone uses it in professional services due to data sensitivity/handling requirements. One of the big 4 firms does use it but for non-client data. Better off learning either your accounting/audit standards or Excel/Alteryx if you really are so free... but like I said, you should enjoy it. It'll be a LONG time before you get a substantial break again (in my case, 14 years).

Damn 14 years, that is a very long time. Best make the most of it in that case like you said. Yeah I'll just take it easy I guess, but seriously, 14 years, that is wayyy too long to go without a break. So did you not go on any holidays or were you not allowed to?

As in, I didn't take any large breaks >1 month. You don't realise how good school holidays/uni breaks are until you don't have them anymore. Thinking back, it wasn't until I was about the 9 year mark that I got married and had two weddings and a two week honeymoon (so all up a month). Then around the 12 year mark I took a month off to take the wife to Europe before we wanted to start a family... and now I'm on parental leave :)

Yeah, I can imagine, being an adult and working in professional services or most jobs seem quite demanding on your time. And that's really sweet and nice to hear, congrats on getting married (only a little late) and congrats on starting a family, you must be a very happy father, the best to you and your family!!!
