I really don't believe how that works. Liek what is the point of the UAI if they let people in the course nowhere near the cutoff. I wonder with the government planning ( in the budget) on spending so much money on university's whether this will affect the cut-offs, or allowing people to enter the course without the UAI needed.

the people who get the uai are the first people in. the other people are let in on other factors such as performance in the relevant subjects in the degree (in engineering people who go well in maths and science are strongly considered), the number of vacancies in the course, eas, etc..

How does that work when the Uni's say that the UAI cut-offs are supremely based on the concept of demand and supply. As in the number of applicants and the number of spots open determine the UAI needed to get into the course. Why then would they let people in below the cut-off?

well some of you're ranks aren't bad.....

but you're marks are really really low. so unless you're school is setting unnaturally hard exams, i think you'll really need to pull up.

well the unis need money so the easiest way is to get as much students possible. Also some people that get in with uai below the cut off have to be "fee payin" students so no hecs. Its all about the money i guess..

uhm....it really depends on the uni and the course you want to get in. uni's say alot of things, to lead you to believe that their uni is better to go to or watever. some unis make their uais heaps high so people think they are going to the best uni (usyd does this) and others, knowing their uni isn't as "prestigious", offer lower cut offs and such incentives so students will come to their uni.

although wen some courses have an insanely high uai, they generally mean it.

and another thing, unis do get support from the government. but they rely so much on international students and domestic full fee paying students so we can all get hecs.

there were stories about how people got into unsw commerce with a UAI 5 points less than the cut off, but 20 points surely seems a bit farfetched
