Hi to any of you that have bought a car recently.

I was looking at carsales.com.au, and I had to put in my phone number to get the dealer location (I was looking for a car that was near me so that I could check it out), and this one was in Preston, about 30-40minute drive, so I thought screw it.

This morning at 9.15am (I registered my email address midnight last night) A dealer calls me up and says are you interested it's a beautiful car blahblahblah, are you coming to see it?
I say "No, it's too far away for me"
He says "Well that's ok, we'll have someone bring it to you"

I'm sort of like "What do you mean by that"...I was a little bit surprised...

They're sending some guy called George, to drive this car 30 minutes, just so I can look at it at my house - at 12pm today - in THREE HOURS.

Are they desperate for a sale, or is this normal practice?
My immediate thought was that there is something VERY wrong with this car if they are so desperate to sell it, but is that what all the dealers are doing now?

hmmm, does sound a bit suss.
but i guess it could just a way to you interested...either way, a potential buyer is better than none.

i recently bought a new car, and the sales dude wanted me to take it for a test drive for the whole day and return it the next day. so yeah, its probably their way of getting sales up etc etc.

Its not entirely unusual afterall they want a sale. I've been given day long test drives (Thankyou penrith ford), driven around in varying cars between a chain of dealers (the big chain in penrith) and probably the most was from Penrith Subaru which was several unaccompanied test drives in various models, doing the shopping, then having the exact model driven out (45mins) for a look and finally having the car delivered and the trade-in picked up.

Vauxhall (GM) in the UK ran a promotion awhile ago where they gave you a vectra for 24 hours to do whatever you wanted with no obligations - you just had to ring up your nearest dealer and make a booking. They even dropped it at your house for you.

30 minutes is too far to drive for you?
Well I'm looking for my first car, so I'm not driving - my father is. I have only seen two cars so far, so I'm still getting a feel for it, and yeah 30 minutes is subsequently too far to drive.

I called the guy back after the initial shock was over and told him not to bother as I was only looking and I might get down there next week, figured that's better than wasting everyone's time because if he did come down here he'd probably be selling it very hard to me for a fair while.

I'm going to check out a few more local dealers tomorrow afternoon. I found heaps in a suburb near me.

I'm still pretty surprised that he was so eager...Seemed like a reasonable price too haha.
