this is entirely my own fault for not doing research on the courses I wanted to do earlier so I’m stuck with a bachelor of science at usyd. absolutely shitting bricks terrified of what this means for my career opportunities because everyone I’ve talked to have all told me bsci is not good and you need to do further study (probably postgrad) to get a job in anything other than research (and I don’t want to do research !!). I don’t know what I’m majoring in yet but 90% most likely something like to do w chemistry or one of the maths sciences (a little less likely)

assuming I can’t/don’t transfer into another uni or course next year, what are some potential career pathways I can go into with just undergrad study in this course and no postgrad? thank you

Career opportunities that are accessible to students holding a Bachelor of Science include:
  • Science technician - This seems like an appropriate profession for someone who is not interested in research but still wishes to work in science. Science technicians typically prepare materials for experiments, maintain relevant equipment, provide support to scientists and students and may be tasked with fieldwork and presenting results (where applicable). Since you are likely to specialise in chemistry or a field relevant to chemistry, this may be a potential career pathway. Additionally, science technicians tend to have stable growth.
  • Laboratory manager - Laboratory managers are the people responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient running of labs to the best of their abilities. Their tasks include managing and supervising staff and supplies in addition to maintaining safety standards. Again, it appears that becoming a laboratory manager necessitates in one of a number of fields, including chemistry, meaning that if you choose to major in chemistry or a field relevant to chemistry, laboratory management may be a possible career pathway for you. Additionally, laboratory managers tend to have strong growth.
I hope this helps! 😄

I am not surprised by these two pathways because both of them are aimed at the fact that we still are dealing with COVID-19 which has not been eradicated yet from Australia so these pathways are very necessary.

Actually, I kinda like these two pathways because they are very helpful as you are responsible for ensuring the PhD lads like @jazz519 can perform their experiments properly without interference. So pretty good paths.

The main math jobs I can think of are

- operation research (including quantative finance analyst)
- data scientist

I think it might be good for you develop some of your knowledge or skills outside of uni. E.g. you perhaps you could take an online course on programming on Udemy or some other platform.
