Of the syllabus, that is.

To follow up the planned alterations to the Ancient History syllabus, a similar policy is being carried out for Modern History. This appears to consist largely of simplifying the content, trundicating portions of some units, and creating a seperate 'Personality' unit. In slightly more detail, the changes;

-World War I has now become World War I:1914-1919; A Source Based Study, eliminating most of the post-war content. This unit has been reduced to 25% of the HSC Exam.
-WWI now has only four topic headings in the syllabus;
1.)War On The Western Front
2.)The Home Front In Britain And Germany
3.)Turning Points.
4.)Allied Victory.

-National Studies have also become 25%.. The following units have been altered as such, involving in most cases some trundication;
1.) Australia 1946-1996 > Australia 1945-1975
2.) China 1910-1949 > China 1927-1949.
3.) Germany 1918-1945 > Germany 1918-1939
4.) Indonesia 1950-1998 > Indonesia 1959-1998
5.) Japan 1904-1941 > Japan 1904-1937
6.) Russia & The USSR 1917-1945 > Russia & The USSR 1917-1941
7.) South Africa 1960-1994 added.
8.) USA 1898-1941 > USA 1919-194.

-Creation of the new 'Personalities In The Twentieth Century'. These appear to be an amalgamation of important figures from the old syllabus. The divide between 'old' and 'new' is 11:13, with the 'new' (As in, not previously on the syllabus) personalities as follows;
1.)Yassar Arafat.
2.)Ben Chifley
3.)Xanana Guasmo.
4.)Ho Chi Minh.
5.)Douglas McArthur
6.)Nelson Mandela.
7.)Golda Meir
8.)Robert Menzies
9.)Ian Paisley
10.)Eleanor Roosevelt
11.)Hideki Tojo
12.)Harry Truman
13.)Isoruku Yamamoto.

-'International Studies In Peace & Conflict' has also become 25%. Changes within this unit include;
1.)A new unit of study; Conflict In Europe 1935-1945 (Hence the WWII components of Germany and Russia/USSR being eliminated.)
2.)The 'death' of another; United Nations As Peacekeeper.
3.)Conflict In South Africa 1948-1994 has 'disappeared'.
4.)Arab-Israel Conflict 1948-1996 has become 1956-1996

-Finally, details of the Earth-shattering change to the format of the HSC Examination itself;
1.)Each Section is worth 25 marks. (Question weighings not listed.) :p

Germany 1918-1945

-A survey of political, economic and social problems in the period 1918-1923.
-Characteristics of relative stability in the period 1924-1929

-Emergence of the democratic republic and the impact of the Treaty of Versailles.

-Impact of the Great Depression on Germany.

2.)The Rise Of The Nazi Party.
-Rise of the NSDAP from 1923
-Hitler's accession to power.
-Initial consolidation of Nazi power 1933-1934

3.)Nazism In Power.
-Hitler's role in the Nazi state.
-Nazism as Totalitarianism?
-The role of propaganda, terror and repression; SA and SS; opposition to Nazism.
-Social and cultural life in the Nazi state; role of Hitler Youth; women, religion.
-Nazi racial policy, anti-semitism, policy and practise to 1939.

4.)Nazi Foreign Policy
-Nature of Nazi foreign policy; Aims and successes to Sept.1939.
-Impact of ideology on Nazi foreign policy to Sept.1939.

Lucky buggering buggers.
I did SA as an inter. study. the whole time i whinged that it was really a NATIONAL STUDY. And what to they do, as soon as we leave???
'Conflict in Europe' looks pretty cool. Pretty damn cool. I took MH with faith of these kind of topics...lucky...rechen-priken-fricken-racha..grr
it's not even worth thinking about.

it prolly is for HSC 2005 considering that we've (class of 04) already done a term's worth of work following the old syllabus...unlucky 4 us

This syllabus remains a Draft during the 'Consultation' period, up to March, so I believe that it will be fully implemented 2005-2006.

geez make it easy for them!! The actual war for germany was my nightmare and now they don't evenhave to do it!! In my day...

War on Germany was also a nightmare for me... this syllabus looks a lot easier than the past one. It seems that there is a lot less than people have to know. I can't believe Personality Study has been increased to 25%... in my opinion it was easy marks, and now they are making it count for more. But I think it's a good idea to make WW1 count for a bit less, because it wasn't really hard, and I never liked the idea of the one essay on the conflicts counting for 30%....

Anyway, back in our day we had to learn....

hehe actually I like this new syllabus, I like that phrase.

On another note, for the entire first week of the HSC Soph and I had that ch ch ch ch changes song stuck in our heads lol.... see what the HSC does to you!

Bah...said it all along... I should have done Chemistry...

But Modern was fun, even with all the crap in their experimental syllabi. We were guineapigs, and now they know what's stupid. :)

I'm completely dirty about this! I've been bitching forever that there's too much to know in the current syllabus and then they go and change it on us after we leave!

they are also changing the ancient history one

and the teachers at my school think there is a good possibility
that we could get assesed on the peace things llike the treaty of versailles
because they are takening it out
and there hasn't been a questionon it yet
but don't count me on that

Yeah Germany is HUGE because we have to study Weimar, Nazi Germ, and War. They're pretty lucky that the latter gets cut.

The personality study, however, is so undeserving of 25 marks. It's not even half as much work as The national or internationl, and for them to be worth the same is stupid.

-if you look at the new personalities though- there's probably more scope for what they can ask- i.e. they've taken out ppl like speer and riefenstahl- whose involvement in history in general is, lets face it, pretty limited, and they're mostly leaders of countries...

still i agree, the new course looks way easier- it's all the bits on germany that i like without any of the crap- blitzkrieg, nazi defeat... hmm, so who's for repeating come 2006?
