its not as good as the other texts for changing self, but at least you will have a more original and fresh approach.

I was just thinking of focusing on the 'self-similarity' bit, and how fractals show that there is a pattern to change.

Good point, Thanks!! I think I can use that in my assignment!!
Yeah, I have found that fractals is one of the hardest to relate to changing self!

One of the hardest parts of this is trying to link fractals to my other material! But I'm working it on it! :)

Pehaps thats because they DONT change, they allways stay the same nomatter how hard (closely) you look at them.
Mabey this is what they are wanting us to do? Look at texts which portray characters which mabey DONT change?? Just an idea

yeah looking at stuff that doesn't change is really good for a contrasting point of view.

don't get caught in the trap of trying to contrive meaning from your texts. there's something to be said for choosing texts suitable for your area of study
Whats that supposed to mean?
The fractals are in the BOS booklet, and the area of study is change (whether it be changing self, perspective, or worlds), so therefore it must be related in some way to these topics.

Right?

if you're doing changing self for example, fractals may or may not be the most suitable text for that particular area of study.
not all the texts in the stimulus booklet are suitable for all the topics. they can all be used but some are better suited than others to particular areas of study. part of a good response is the ability to select the most appropriate texts

Another good song for changing self is "Cat's In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin (sung by Cat Stevens. The lyrics are here:

*********************************************

My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

*********************************************

I haven't done any notes on this yet, but it's a good song anyhow...lol

im just curious but why hasnt nebody mentioned the fact that text 5 uses "technology" as change!?

i mean, maybe its a change in methods of teaching?
but its still the same old crap being taught
hehe

i do english standard btw and trust me, explaining fractal calculus to a class full of "general mathematics" students is quite frustrating!!
dont try it at home
hehe

Hey freaking_out, I'm actually doing an essay relating Creed to Harwood right now :)

I've compared and contrasted a few things so far, so here's a list:
- First person is used in both Father and Child and the song, in order to better connect the composer to the responder.
- The uncertainty of the persona in the song is also reflected in The Glass Jar through the boy.
- There is a contrast between the song and Professor Eisenbart in Prize-Giving - while the persona in the song undergoes a change from uncertainty to sureness and confidence, Eisenbart, when confronted by the titian-haired girl, changes from being secure to uncertain.

Hope this gets you started, when I'm done with the essay, I'll email it to Lazarus, and also post it on this forum so it's up straight away.

:)
