Hi, Does anybody have a list of all the valencies of all the elements on the periodic table?
Thanks

Valencies ?

Do you mean Valencies in general or Valence electrons ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valency_%28chemistry%29

Sorry for being lazy, but I hope this helps ... I do chemistry too ...

"Why is Oxygen expressed as O2 ?"

There are

2 eletrons in 1p orbital

2 electrons in 2p orbital

4 electrons in 2d orbital

- 6 electrons in row 2, right ?

and 2 more electrons can fit 2d orbital ?

Oxygen 1 - Takes 2 electrons

Oxygen 2 - Gives 2 electrons

Then theyre both happy

Thanks and the easy answer to why oxygen is expressed as O2 is because it is a diatomic molecule =)

Now I made my own which includes sthe more common elements and groups and the reactivity dseries of metals, I wrote it because you never know when you might need to study it, especially for writing formulae.

Not exactly like that, but the two oxygen atoms SHARE two electrons between them ie. two electrons from both oxygen atoms - total of four - orbit around the nuclei of both atoms. It is not a polar bond between the two oxygen atoms.

please correct me if im wrong, but valency i understand to be the ability to lose or gain electrons?

Now, when you look at your periodic table, you have the 8 main groups (columns).

1A - +1
2A - +2
3A - +3
4A - +/- 4 (this one we were told is tricky)
5A - - 3
6A - -2
7A - -1
8A - obviously noble gasses.

Does this make sense? Lets go with oxygen again. We know that Oxygen has 6 electrons in its outer shell. Its aim is to get 8 electrons. So, it receives two to complete its outer shell. Because electrons are negatively charged, the oxygen becomes more negative, hence -2 (2 negative electrons). Please tell me im right here =p

oxygen is a diatomic molecule, that is it exists as O2 like most other gases N2 etc.
oxygen does not give/take electrons with itself, it shares electrons - you can imagine that its two non-metals so its covalent

also you'll have remember the valencies of the transition metals
