i want to work between schoolies and uni so i can save up some $ for when i start uni. but my family has booked a holiday for 2 weeks in january. are there any places that would let me take these 2 weeks off?

Unlikely.
Just say you're available, work all of Nov/Dec and then cancel in Jan.
They probably won't offer you a job or give you a reference though.

If you manage to get something more permanent that christmas casual, ie part time/casual that will continue into the next year, then two weeks in january MIGHT be ok. You should be upfront when you are asked about your availabilities, or be prepared to resign if they dont give you the leave you want.
If your holiday is booked for the middle/end of january, then you'll probably have more luck than if it is booked for the beginning of jan.
