I don't know if a thread has already been started, but lets get a general profile of ppl starting commerce at sydney this year

Reason for doing this course: Always had an interest in business
Did you do business or economics in ur HSC?: Business only, mark: 94.
1st semester elective: Australian Politics
Major: Management

Why i did this course: I did BEc instead of Bcom as BEc is basically just 2 majors, while BCom is filled with core units i dont want to do. As for doing this type of subject in general, i have always loved comerce related things. Did share trading when i was in year 6. Also have an interest in politics (hence the gov major)

Why i did this course: Same as Rafy, really. Way too many irritating core units in Commerce, bit more flexibility and I was always interested in doing an economics major anyway. I enjoyed both Business and Economics in high school and I've always been interested in this area I guess.

Why i did this course: The core subjects of Commerce give it its employability. Most firms know that the kids who do Eco either couldn't get into Comm or couldn't cope with its core mathematics - a skill required by everyone in the business sector because of its emphasis on quick-thinking, problem-solving and numbers-ness. Don't believe me? Check the department's employment statistics.

I picked it at USyd because it's the best business degree in the country.

That's not necessarily true.

There isn't a marketing firm in Australia which will give you a job if you don't have a degree or a SHITLOAD of XP. A degree is a good way to get such XP.

While I won't disagree with you on the firms opinions of BEc students (cos thats definitely subjective, plus I don't know what the general consensus is either). What "core mathematics" is involved in a cumm-arse degree that is not offered/not completed within the BEc?

Then explain this one - I got more than enough for Comm, and maths is a non-issue.

the cores are the same in both degrees cept for no acct in BEc

Yeah I doubt it's "the best". Every degree is slightly different aswell, so it's difficult to measure quality when there is so much variation.

I've spoken to many ppl in marketing/communications and they've told me that they prefer smaller unis like Charles Sturt because of smaller class sizes. And although a degree is not essential when entering a marketing/communications position, it is prefered. It also is highly valued when applying for senior positions.
Besides, I want to learn the theory behind marketing, because this is what interests me. Personally, if that means doing a degree packed with maths than it'll be challenging but all the more rewarding.

I thought most firms usually concentrate on what majors you did, not so much the course.

... i chose b.econ over b.comm because to me, not because of my UAI or inability in mathematics, it's more focused towards the operation of the public/government sector and maybe even financial institutions... whereas b.commerce= employment in the private corporate business sector, indicated by its core units of study in accounting etc... that exceed b.econ's limited four... from ecmt and econ + econ major. b.eco is more open to choose varied units of study.

i don't get it- isn't ECMT1020 (busi+eco stats B) a core unit for b.eco, but not for b.comm? Meaning they don't have to go any further with 'hard- core' maths within econometrics, but then of course in finance, accounting and business info systems (for which i think hsc maths ext1 is a prerequisite). anyway, i chose b.eco not necessarily as my first preference but as my third, ahead of b.comm because of to me what seemed a clear direction towards business and not government.

seriously, ... you're wrong.
There are many 'marketing' degrees out there and without a strong theoretical framework, you will be outclassed by other marketers.
what's to say you can't have experience WHILST doing your degree? This is what I'm doing and after graduation I feel that I will have one of the best possible starting positions, with excellent chances of promotion, etc.

Also, I plan on doing an MBA eventually ($130,000 salary 5 years after completion, anyone?) which would require me to have done a degree (esp. at MBA schools like harvard)
