Comp1917 or Comp1911 (1 Viewer)

So I'm still trying to decide between civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, and don't want to make that decision yet.
However, I'm trying to decide whether I should take Comp1917 or Comp1911. On the UNSW Civil engineering handbook, it only lists comp1911 as an alternative to engg1811 but doesn't mention Comp1917. Am I still allowed to take Comp1917 with civil engineering or not?

(P.s I am interested in computing and would prefer not to take engg1811).

COMP1917 can be taken instead of COMP1911 regardless of what stream you're in.

You won't need COMP1917 for civil but given that you're unsure and are interested in computing you might as well give it a go. If you find it way too difficult you'll be able to drop down to COMP1911 easily in the first few weeks.

That's fine. If ENGG1811 is listed, then COMP1911 and COMP1917 are acceptable alternatives. Granted your timetable will be worse with that, with more hours and classes.

Hey, so I just found out that I can't take Comp1917 this semester as it literally clashes with all of my other courses. What are the ways I can catch up to students currently doing Comp1917 in terms of prerequisites for other computing courses.

it's not that hard to not get a clash

this is a pretty decent timetable

you just have to wait a little bit for people to drop/move classes or worst comes to worst ask the faculty to manually enroll you

I tried this, but I couldn't find the Comp1917 'other' time slot at 4:00pm. THe only one available on Myunsw is the one at 2:30-4:00pm. Is there a possibility that these classes might open up in the near future?

Nope, im doing Advanced Science as well and majoring in Phys, which needs PHYS1141 i think

Very well.

You could remove ENGG1000 (i.e. do that in sem 2) and choose ELEC1111 and see if COMP1917 fits in.

according to timetable http://timetable.unsw.edu.au/2016/COMP1917.html#S1-5255 it says that class is still available

but if that spot is already taken then you can enroll into that 2:30-4pm slot and move your math1141 lecture but then you have to move your COMP1917 lab somewhere else

yes once uni starts a lot of people drop/swap so just keep an eye out for it

The 4pm slots are full. Unlikely to open up as first years don't have much flexibility to change things around (so they will obviously keep a slot that works well for them). It's still possible that someone might change, but you'll need to constantly watch out for it.

The system will almost certainly disallow students to enrol in that slot in order to funnel students into the more open slots (to balance out classes). It can be considered full right now.
