Comparison between a Private College vs University

- I know there are many students, (including me) who would like to get straight to work to gain independence, but University seems like the ONLY WAY to get a reasonable job, i just wanna get a idea of what you think

Lets say, i attend a private college like maclay, and get a diploma from them, they guarantee employment, do you think the students can play on the same level as students from Uni? - as in promotion respects?

Give me all the ideas

i don't know about other colleges, but i do know that Macleay College is highly regarded by employers, particularly their Real Estate course as it is so comprehensive. I think Sar Sar goes to Macleay, if you have any questions about it you could maybe PM her.

From what I understand, a degree is almost always preferred to a diploma, but it depends on the industry...

i would like to pursue a career related to business marketing or management, but im afraid, uni's are the only way out to get a reasonable job, i've seen my brothers friend drop out half way through their courses, i just thought of this days ago, and that freaked me out, and i've considered private colleges and thought is a fantastic idea, like my parents can get a loan and i pay them back as i work, but really is the uni only the way out to get a reasonable job with good career prospects

That is a gross over-generalisation that a uni student would make......

You're right, it does depend on the industry, but it isn't 'almost always' preferred to a diploma. Real Estate, paralegal, childcare and visual design diplomas from Tafe and Private Colleges are very respected qualifications as they provide the recipients with the hands-on experience that uni struggles to offer.

i second YEAR12, particularly as i have completed courses at both TAFE and a private institution for my Real Estate qualifications. I have little knowledge of other industries, but i do know that employers in the property industry look for employees who have had plenty of hands-on experience, which TAFE and private institutions such as Macleay provide to a high standard

employment prospects are generally quite good, as there are many, many real estate agencies around! There is also usually great potential for promotion, and you don't always have to work for a boss- with your agent's license, you can open your own agency and be your own boss

You can check out award wages for Real Estate on the DIR site, www.dir.nsw.gov.au, to get an idea of basic wages and training wages, but these are the minimum only, and most people i know in the industry are paid above the award. It really depends on how generous your employer is Not forgetting the commissions, again depending on your employer.

Out of Property Management and Sales, most would say that Sales is the higher paid, which is often the case, but good Property Managers are highly sought after and the remuneration can be very good. As a Principal of your own agency, the potential for expansion is always there, and you may choose to specialise in one area, such as Commercial properties, Residential etc. Managing an agency is also highly paid, currently my fiance manages several agencies, and he loves it.

Anyway, there are so many different areas of specialisation- real estate agent,business agent, stock and station agent, sales, property management, auctioneer, valuer, body corporate manager...sorry, this is a bit long, but if you have any q's just ask

That's why I said 'almost always' and not 'always' - I think the number of cases where a degree would be preferred would far outweigh the number of cases where it wouldn't be. There are always a handful of exceptions, as you've pointed out.

would a commerce degree would be viewd better by the boss than a diploma of accounting for an accounting job?

It all comes down to what is more specialised. Despite the view adopted by many uni students who would like to believe that uni is the key to a job, employers don't simply look at the institution applicants obtained their qualifications. They look at practical experience, interpersonal skills and specialised knowledge.
