For some reason I was thinking about the future of examinations and the types of things my kids are going to have to do (I guess after realising how much things have changed since my parents were in highschool). Anyway, I realised that, eventually, examinations will all be done on computers.

Personally, I think this is a good idea which will no doubt be adopted in the future (it may already be being used, I don't really know). Obviously with the right security restrictions and specified examination computers, it could allow students to write a lot more (this could be seen as both an advantage and a disadvantage I suppose, whatever floats your boat..).

Of course, specified typing lessons and examinations would have to take place so as not to give any student an unfair advantage (either way, some people hand write faster than other students anyway, so typing faster would have the same implications...).

Anyway! I think this would make the marking process a lot easier for markers (they wouldn't have to deal with terrible writing), and exams could be sent straight to the marking centre without having to manually send them. It would also combat the problem of sore hands in exams.

What does everyone think?

(Sorry about the length of this, I never intended it to be this long!)

I was watching the Simpsons today and there was a dream sequence where Bart was still at school as an old man and they had fancy computers instead of desks.

So yes, I think they will.

But seriously, I've often wished I could have a computer for Business extended reponses and English exams.

Maybe, but doing exams on computers pretty much sucks and is 100x harder even if you're a great typer :p

And what if your exam gets www.lost.eu/400ab along the way, like u forgot to save it properly or something?? but i suppose it does away with hand cramps. But i know if i tried to type that fast i would keep hitting the wrong keys and stuff.

I know they'd have to somehow overcome some technological problems but look how fast technology is developing. There'd be someway that every student's exam is safe... Possibly hard copies kept at the school? Something to that extent...

And, I find I make many more mistakes whilst hand writing, compared to typing, but each to their own.

I doubt it....handwritting is a fundamental skill that they wouldn't risk losing. There's also the cost of infrastructure and the massive advantage that fast typists would have over slow typists etc.

What about fast handwriters > slow handwriters?

I can type about 120 words per minute without stuffing up spelling or punctuation much, while your average non-computer-nerd-type-person could do less than a quarter of that.

The difference between fast and slow writers is nowhere near as much :D

True. Although I am a fairly slow writer and that might play havoc with my ability to crank out the HSC essays.

Well pianists would be at an advantage!!
Yeah...if we typed using a piano...
My logic tellls me that computer nerds would be at an advantage as fast typing speeds kinda directly related with typing fast:p
