HI everyone
This might be an absolutely ridiculous question but im a bit confused.
How do rankings work exactly?

I am 1st for one subject, 2nd for four, and 3rd for one.

I came 2nd in all my subject by a very small amount, not that it matters. I also managed to do this with a mediocre level of study.

What i was wondering is, if i study hard for the hsc and go better than the person ranked first, they get my mark right? So what the impetus for me to do well in it at all if i wont get my mark?

And also, does this mean that i can still go well or should i have worked to get better ranknigs earlier?

Basically, am i screwed from getting a really good atar or not?

I go to a public school thats just averagely ranked if that helps.

Thanks for any help :)

No, you're not screwed.

Since you've been beaten by one or two people in most of your courses, it is clear that they are better than you at those subjects, therefore they are likely to do better than you in the HSC. As long as you don't slacken off then you will receive the second highest mark for each subject in your HSC, theoretically. Also, depending on how far apart you are in terms of assessments marks from those above you, have a good chance of getting a mark as good as rank 1.

You can't really change anything now tbh, your ranks are awesome regardless of what your school is ranked, keep it up and 90+ is definitely on the horizon.
