If the atar is a rank, like if you get 99 then you have beaten 99% of the cohort, then shouldn't the median atar be 50? How come it's 69.2? Really confused..

I think it's because multiple people get the same ATAR
E.g 40 people might get 83.20 whereas 23 people might get 89.45 so that each 0.05 has a different number of people achieving it.
Kinda confusing because I don't know how to explain it properly

No it's because the ATAR is a percentile of people who started year 7 (or maybe completed year 10). All drop outs account for the bottom 20-30%.

+1

As a general rule, most people that do not receive an ATAR or drop out before year 12 are from the lower end of the cohort, and ATARs are calculated from year 7 cohort

And it's very hard to do well on assignments or in exams if you don't actually do them.

The point is it is 50, cause this is how the system lets it be, you can't say its 69.2. say for example, one person might get 50 Atar, this indicates other people may also have gotten 50 Atar, if this is true then the median Atar must be 50 no matter if the Atar is out of 100 or 99.95.

I hope this help, there nothing to be confused about here. :)
wut.
