JL's dirge just keeps getting more and more and more annoying as more and more and more people FORGET him.
Despite my not being a huge fan of that song, you are such a bloody drongo.

Not better than the original, but perhaps on par: The Futureheads' cover of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love". It's pretty fucking great.

I haven't heard the cover of JL's imagine but covers are meant to
enrich or acknowledge a particular artist's work. When a song is covered,
it becomes timeless.
can you imagine (no pun) if no one covered bob dylan's music:
(great songwriting but ordinary singing)
as already mentioned hendrix's cover of dylan's "all along the watchtower"
is exceptional and so is the byrd's cover of "mr. tambourine man"
(which was Dylan's only no. 1 hit)

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Eric Clapton - Cocaine (JJ Cale)
Metallica - Die, Die My Darling (Misfits)
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)
Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks (Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie)
Santana - Black Magic Woman (Fleetwood Mac)
Iced Earth - Creatures of the Night (KISS)

Last one may be dubious for the six remaining KISS fans in existance.

Another one i've found recently, Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's (NIN) Hurt is just amazing. As is his cover of In My Life, originally by The Beatles.

Cash is great. :)

:-o *shocked face*

NIN's performance of Hurt is spectacular .. Cash just made it easier to listen to, but theres something about the passion in Trent's voice when singing that song, it means alot more. If you listen to the downward spiral in full (the nin album that song was originally from) you appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of that song after the industrial grunge of many preceeding tracks on the album.

As for the Shins cover of We will become Silhouettes (previously mentioned), its a tough call .. the whole attraction of the postal service for me is the fact theres an indie techno blend with lyrics that mean something :p, not to discount the Shins though, they're great in their own right however I think the lyrics mould better with the style that postal preforms it in ..

Covers that imo are better than originals:

John Mayer - Kid A (Can understand John's version!) [Radiohead]
The White Stripes - Death Letter [Son House]

Reznor is great, no doubt about it. But Cash's version was amazing. It was far more than "easier to listen to".

Knockin' on Heavens Door - Originally by Bob Dylan, excellent covers by both Eric Clapton and Guns 'n' Roses
Wild Thing - Originally by The Troggs, covered by Jimi Hendrix
Crossroads - Originally by Robert Johnson I think, covered by Cream, probably the second best cover ever behind All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix
