PErhaps you have a worm/spyware/etc that has disabled it so run spybot, adaware and antivirus etc to check

Some Spy/Ad/Malware can disable the task manager. Did you try scanning with Adaware/Spybot/Spy Sweeper?

before you do anything get some cds or dvds and back up all your files. Have xp and office installation cds, ready. Then download Avast and spybot. Run them and remove all viruses! and psyware!. After than try to get task manager. if you cant then format ur hardisck and reinitsall everything. Dont bother trying to fix or taking it to a computer dude, unless you cant backup your files. OTher wise its better and quicker less frustrating to format and reinstall everything. This time be more careful!

interesting, when i tried to run taskmgr.exe, it says:

"Another program is currently using this file."

haha since when? Ad-aware didn't pick up anything, i think i need to go get the latest version. i haven't run norton antivirus yet. i think some stupid spyware has crept into my computer and disabled the biatch.

what's the main reason u want the taskmanager?

to force-quit programs or u just want it to work for general purpose usage.

here's a fix i read up:
try a different keyboard :p

i just tested the ctrl, alt and del keys, they work just fine.

i don't know, it just feels empty without task manager. and yes, i do need it to force programs to shut when it freezes! and look at the CPU usage meter when i'm bored.

there's another program that does the same thing as the force quit in task manager, but as for CPU meter...

haha.. then try running "Performance" from "Administrative Tools".
Do this: Start>Control Panel\Performance and Maintenance\Administrative Tools>Performance
From there you can choose any activity meter you wish.. like hard disk red/write and even network transmissions. Although it doesn't look as neat as the Task Manager.

hahaha i didn't even know that existed! thanks for that.

but the problem still lies, ctrl + alt + del doesn't work. this is a family computer too, so i don't wanna go formatting or anything major. and if there is no quick fix, i'll just have to live with manually restarting the computer if a program locks up!
