I've no intention of transferring into medicine, being a first year USYD Pharmacy student, but having not heard from any of my friends doing medicine since semester started (and for good reason too), I became curious about what the nature of the medicine course is like.

Being medicine, it is really demanding on its students' time, but I was wondering how many credit points they have to attempt per semester, and what their contact hours are like. I've heard strange things ranging from 9-5pm days every day, and attempting a gazillion credit poitns per semester :s so yeah, I wanna see what the real scheme of things is....

In first and second year, I was averaging around 24 credit points per semester.
Contact hours were approximately 20 hours per week, but it was expected that much of the learning would be self-directed and students would have to put in significant effort outside face-to-face contact hours. The 9-5 days are probably explained by long breaks and shoddy timetabling - e.g. lectures 9-11 then tute from 3-5.

I'M TRYING TO CALL MY WIFE..

Oh wait.. no i dun have one of them... ... yeh im trying to get some stuff done.. lik house chores and clean up.. while i cant sleep.

i believe they want to modify nursing training to include payments hopefully to increase nurses and also make it more worthwhile and clinically orientated like in the past..
but medicine is not goin to do tat.. they were thinking of paying 6th yrs in some states to be similar to overseas nations

What?! You serious you guys get so little work for something so hard?!! We pharm students average 24 credit points per semester, and we have...(counts)....26 hours per week! Hmph...maybe I shoulda done medicine after all (not that I am sure I would have gotten into it anyway...)

But then again, there's the self-directed part of learning, in which case I would fail medicine very badly, since I can't even get my bum out of my seat for pharmacy!

they pay final year students in the US, don't they? i think even a basic allowance to cover travel costs or something would be kind.

lala2:
please realise that is just UNSW new course

I am on 28-30 hrs... and Self Directed Learning takes up 1-3 hrs a night depending on time. UWA recommended 1 hr in study for every hr at uni..>.<

Bob.J: sorry to hear that.. want a hug? ..

vodkacrumble: I am not too sure mabbe :( but in Australia most of us are lucky to be in med thanks to HECS/CSP :D so it kinda makes up for the high tutition fees of the US
