So I have to construct a DFD for my last assignment. I find DFD has a lot of symbols [not like 3 simple symbols in many textbook (circle, square, 3 sides rectangle)]. Many websites use different symbols and they all use differently

http://www.conceptdraw.com/examples/dfd-diagram <-- especially this one

Can I use the symbols from those sites? Can I construct my DFD as same as them? I know it's off the syllabus but my teacher expects us to do something like above:eek:

If only I did IPT.

I know what states are and how to build state machines, but have no idea what a DFD is :(

Data Flow Diagrams are not my specialty but each of those seem fine to me. I would steer clear of the unnecessarily complex symbols such as the "entity with ID and location mention" and try to stick to the syllabus as much as possible, you can't be marked down through not going beyond that.

If you have the Samuel Davis textbook he has some excellent examples so i highly recommend you refer to that.

You should stick to the syllabus because that's what you should be taught during class and what you'll be tested on in the HSC. I've used the three symbols for my DFD in my assignment and didn't lose any marks. However, you should ask your teacher to make sure just in case :)
