for the dot pt; deduce the ions present in a sample from the results of tests, do we have to memorize all of the flow diagrams etc? What do we have to know for this one?

I good guide to what you need to know is to look over past 3-4 HSC Qs.

I think you have to remember all the tests and the colours. Equations would be a plus to remember.

i don't think u have to memorise anything

its says deduce, that means infer from what is known, so u'd be given a flowchart or something similar to work off...

u don't have to memorise charts u have learnt, just know how to use them

Seriously, try to remeber all the flowcharts and stuff, and try to get a solubility table from somewhere and memorise as much as you can

in the exams they'll ask you things like: I have either Sulfate or Carbonate ions in a solution. How do I determine which one it is? Or how do you distinguish between Barium and Calcium ions?

If you have a practical exam, it will most likely be based on this too.

I did the prac test! It was fun. The recognising the cations and anions one. Part of it was to fill out a flow chart. So remember the flowchart. Any flowchart. But it's easier to memorise the tests for the ions.

An easy way to remember? I written each cation/anion on separate A3-sized papers in a display folder. Then I made smaller copies and stuck them on the wall facing my toilet. Toilet...
