Hey guys,

I was wondering if it was at all possible to defer an accounting cadetship for 1 year as I want to travel and volunteer overseas. Do most firms, including the Big 4, usually allow this. If so, when would be the best time to tell them of my deferral; e.g. Before, during or after the interview or should I wait until it I get formal acceptance and a contract?

Thanks for your help.

Depends how much you want this (both the travel/volunteering and the cadetship).

You could try to get the cadetship first, and then once accepted, see if they're flexible but there's no guarantee they won't just withdraw the offer if you can't start on the prescribed date. That being said, I've heard plenty of people in big4 who defer but they negotiate this quite early on (i.e. not just before they're due to start).
