Im interested in this, but im a bit confused about applying...
1. Am i correct in saying that you must be a post grad to apply for dentistry?
2. What undergrad degree must you do? Or you can do any?
3. Do i need to apply and take the umat this year (next year going to uni)? OR u can do it when u have finished ur undergrad course

thnx

i am pretty sure denistry at usyd is a graduate degree... ie, u must have done some degree or an other before u can apply for it...
half sure abt following, but make sure by reading course description from usyd official sites/books:
i doubt u will need to do any specific under grad course
u need gamsat rather than umat
u can do ur gamsat any time... and with the mark u got from gamsat , combining with ur wam (or gpa) they select ppl into denistry... (maybe even add an interview...)

yea usyd dentistry is a post-graduate course. That is you need to have completed a bachelors undergraduate course before applying. Im geussing a good way to start is by doing B Medical Science

There is also another undergraduate course called B oral Health and from syd uni website it says,

'' In the first year students study anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics, sociology and psychology and are introduced to oral health clinical practice. The remaining two years are devoted to clinical practice, together with epidemiology, marketing and promotion, population health and further biomedical sciences. ''

Check out usyd site for more info,
http://www.syduni.com/fstudent/undergrad/study/courses.shtml

just click find course then search for dentistry...ull find it

im hearing that u do the gamsat only if u fail the umat, can anyone confirm that??

ok heres, another question, if i decide not to do dentistry, and just take medical science what are my career options with medsci. On the usyd site it says " the program forms an ideal base for graduate research in medical science. Students who are planning a career in medical research should plan to study an Honours year followed by research for a Masters or PhD."

what careers are those??

A couple of Uni's interstate offer dentistry undergrad - eg Adelaide, Griffith(?)For these, you need the UMAT and a UAI of 95+
Google undergrad dentistry or go to ausmedstudent.com

UMAT and GAMSAT are two completely different exams.
No one "fails" the UMAT.

i suggest don't do medical science, it's a bit too borad and risky and what if you don't get into dentistry then you're stuck with it...do soemthing you really like with better career opportunities

lol no
they're two complete different exams

the 'U' in UMAT stands for undergraduate, the 'G' in Gamsat stands for 'graduate'

you sit the gamsat test if you've done a degree and what to do dentistry as your second, you don't need to hhave ever sat for umat

i know i mean that u do the umat first be4 the course, then if u dont have the right mark, u have do do the gamsat later during uni.

If you're looking to stay in Sydney, you dont need to do the UMAT - its only for Medicine/Dentistry at the Undergraduate level. For you, only the GAMSAT is required, after you complete your undergraduate studies - as Dentistly in USyd is a Graduate program. Its said that an undergraduate degree in the biomedical sciences helps in the GAMSAT.

then mabbe u dun realli want dent?..

just a thought i guess.. dent in usyd will take u 4yrs.. and a minimum of a 3 yrs course beforehand .. total 7yrs minimum..

if u kno u want to do dent.. goto melb? adel? UWA? or griffith.. or just try out at least..? its 5 yrs.. learn a lil and live a lil..

but again ure looking at 98-99+ and UMAT for the 5 yrs one.. for these interstate ones..

note: on the link below.. its a GPA 4.. but tats easy to get.. its lik MINIMUM.. most ppl hav D-HD avg.. or just miss out on grad med..
http://www.dentistry.usyd.edu.au/student/bdent.php

btw u still do interviews+GAMSAT+Bacholers+Practical aptitude test = usyd

well hav a troll around the net and think about wat its worth to u :)

@xrtz: med sci will grant u a career in medical research... so if u see doctors as practial side of medicine, think medical science as the research side...

however, i object to the notion that u r "taking too much risk"... long as ur passion lies in the mecidinal area, med sci would still be the number one choice for undergrad... it is, however, true that the scope for a b med sci degree is rather narrow...

and also, u DON'T NEED to do b sci or b oral health or b med sci to apply for b dent...
it's NOT a post grad, it's a grad degree, which means there will not be any restrictions on the first bacholar u do...

however, doing related degree will probably assist u in gamsat and/or interview...

@pointdexter: yeh tha'ts true, 7 yrs... but living away from home also attract a financial burden on the family... do consider that, and all the psychological affects it may haf...

actualli depends where u live.. if u live next to usyd...its an issue..
if lik me u live 1.5hr from usyd its not worth it..

financialli for me it would cost less since i can get out of uni to be a dentist faster and return to syd straight after.. save 2 yrs on studying costs and concentrating and specialising straight away...

psychologically i was ready.. many ppl cant.. but it makes u independent..

Btw i resent that u claim tat medical doctors dun do research in medicine.. alot of time we are trained as both researchers too (the first 3 yrs are eqv to medsci) .. personally
i intend to hav both a clinical.. and a research career..

generalising is not the best way to explain it..

yes in fact... i retract my comment on how doctors do the practial side...
perhaps i am not the best person to speak such matter, as i am not doing medicine...

btw, by psychologically, i mean u r pressured to do good as ur famliy has sacrificed much to support u...

and i do agree on the fact taht if u are already living 1.5 hr from sydney, then it makes little difference to which uni u choose...

but who said undergraduate dentistry is better than graduate entry?
you have to take into account that most of the applicants will be immature kids who see a 6 figure salary attached to the course. Of course many grad applicants for usyd will also see that but they will be more mature about what they want and make sure they finish the course, unlike some 18 yo guy who doesnt know what he wants and transfers into med or whatever after a year of dent, thereby wasting a place for another potential student.
