Well, to be honest - I wanted more space because I would record movie clips as well (Kodaks use QuickTime .MOV and Sony's use MPEG, so I'm not too sure about Canons, but I would assume QT or MPEG support, one of the two popular video-playback formats on the PC/Mac).
I purchased a 256MB at a very cheap price (see eBay), and when compared to recommended retail prices - it was something like:
256MB for $100 online, or
256MB for $250 in the store (for example).
I calculated the cost per dollar, in terms of the number of MB's that you can purchase per dollar, and (naturally), the 'bigger' and larger cards will attract a lower cost, per MB on average. For example you could buy a 32MB MMC and pay $40 or so, however you can double the memory (to say 64MB, or quadruple it to 128MB and so on) - with reasonably 'cheaper' costs per MB of memory in the long-run.
I wouldn't have purchased the 512MB, because it was just too expensive (about a half year ago). I truly realised how much space I required when I sold the 64MB and had to go off the internal memory (16MB) for a short period of time. It was during this period that I had to reduce the quality of my pictures to the minimal settings - poor quality in my opinion, but small enough to email to your friends. I always like to take pictures at the highest resolution (and quality) and so I'd require more memory, for each picture.
Here is what I currently have:
16MB internal + 256MB SD, on the Kodak settings:
*** Best ~220 images
** Better ~350 images
* Good ~700 images
The dimensions remain the same (I haven't really taken different photos at varying resolutions and "levels" of quality on the Kodak, always at Best) - and so I like to zoom in, pan and look for details and things like that with my photos, which require larger file sizes on average (approximately half a megabyte per image, on a 3.1MP camera).
I hope that explains my reason(s). As always, you can never have enough storage space, if you have a MMC (or SD), or whichever external memory Canon uses, you can buy a USB card reader and writer, storing your music, documents and other personal files on the card itself (although this will not be 'viewed' on the camera, of course). It's good to know that I can still buy 256MB, 512MB or in the future 1GB memory and will be able to store much more than simply photos on the card - using the memory interchangeably between devices (not just the camera) but in pdas, mp3 players, and so on.
