I have a short essay assigned just before the summer holidays started, but I'm having difficulties understanding one of the questions.

'Discuss the extent to which the functions of law are achieved in Australia.'

Any help would be appreciated.

From my understanding, the question can be re-phrased to something along the lines of: to what extent has Australian law achieved its objectives.
Hopefully by re-phrasing the question, it is easier to dissect it into parts:
- Functions of law i.e. law needs to: achieve justice, be accessible and enforceable, reflect community values, use resources efficiently, give potential for appeals and reviews, etc.
- Discuss the extent i.e. how well have these functions or 'objectives' been reached? e.g. the recent Thomas Kelly case court ruling has stirred up community uproar - questions whether justice has been achieved and also recognises the potential for an appeal by the DPP (Source: SMH)

Hope I could be of some help.
