I heard that everyone doing Chemistry does the same pracs e.g. heat of combustion of ethanol...is this true? Or do teachers at different schools choose their own pracs?

Yes there are ones in the syllabus that must be conducted. Although the method might change slighlty between pracs, the aim of them will be the same.

Yep, its true, its mainly because BOS has the ability to test the pracs within the syllabus. Teachers can either set them up as assessments or just do them in the period but they must be covered.

So we'll need to know the method/apparatus/ways to improve the experiment etc. for the HSC exam? - for every practical set in the syllabus.

Well you could be shown something and asked for ways to improve it.

Be asked to say your own pratical and then how to increase the reliability etc.

In the HSC exam, they can ask you anything related to the prac. You must be familar with the procedures and results of the prac. Titration is one of the popular one, although it wasnt on this year's paper.

For each experiment, know the aim, equipment, method/procedure, observations, results, discussion and conclusion as well as:

- Justify aspects of the experiment (like the procedure)
- Evaluate ways in which the accuracy (measure with pipettes or whatever) and reliability (repeat, average class results) could be improved
- Assess the validity (compare with text book, ask teacher) of your conclusions
- Identify/describe hazards and safety issues
