Can simulated media be held responsible for the acts of people? Whether it be assault, indecency towards others, rape, etc?

For example (and somebody did find an article on this), does pornography lead to increased sexual aggression in those with tendencies towards sexual aggression already?

It probably does have somewhat of an effect, though I believe through a quick look at the available recent meta-studies that this is quite up for debate especially in regard not to just apparent emotional changes such as more thoughts of violent acts but in regard to ACTUAL acts of violence.

Okay well, say for example... If simulated child porn was legalised. Would this prompt otherwise normal people to become serial sex offenders?

No, in this context it would be more like..

Say Sony came out with a PS3 game whereby you could run over blackies and force them into slavery. If you already had tendencies towards Nazism and White Supremacy, do you think this game would encourage you to act out your fantasy??

The greatest hypocricy in this debate is the lenience towards violence (not that I oppose it), but when it comes to sex WELL THEN EVERYBODY LOOSES THEIR MINDS!

In mainstream TV and movies, people are routinely executed and tortured. We even tolerate footage of real, horrific crimes being committed from news footage of war zones ect.

Now take the movie Ken Park. Banned in Australia because adults depicted teenagers having sex.

How can this not strike you as absurd?

But plenty of it is, and it is tolearated.

e.g. movies like Saw and Hostel which show graphic torture, mutilation and murder for sadistic pleasure.

But they are not banned because they are not REAL. Just as adults portraying underage adolesents is not REAL.

Both depict something illegal, although torture and muder is actually far worse than teenagers having sex. Why should one be treated so differently?

Also as the one I just read pointed out, people who are more likely to commit indecent acts are often more likely to watch pornography.

I think that it provides a catalyst for you to execute your fantasies through a legal medium, thus decreasing the likelihood of pursuing the actual act.

I can run over darkies in GTA san andreas?

Do i have the urge to then go and do that in the street? PErhaps.

Wait i just understood the question. IF i was predisposed to wanting to run over darkies, then i played the game, would this make me acutally run over darkies?

Australia has simultaneously some of the strictest pornography laws in the Western world and the third highest rape count per capita.

i.e.

Greece
"Extreme or graphic pornography is generally restricted to adults or X-rated. Apart from that, there are no other restrictions to pornography distribution and possession, while the law stating than hardcore pornography is to be supplied only to adults is frequently ignored and rarely enforced."
59th highest rapes per capita

Ireland
"No laws against pornography (other than child pornography) as such exist"
33rd highest rapes per capita

Denmark
"It is, however, not illegal to possess images or videos of people above 15 if the person filmed or photographed has given consent.
People in Denmark have free access to pornography; it is sold in most convenience stores, and is available for purchase or rental in practically every video store, including Blockbuster. There are a few regulations, such as being placed out of the eyesight of children. Pornography may not be sold to persons under the age of 15. The TV-channel Kanal København broadcasts hardcore pornography free and uncoded at night."
23rd highest rapes per capita.

Netherlands
"Magazines sold openly at normal newsstands. Pornographic movies are rated for viewers 16 or over including hardcore"
22nd highest rapes per capita

Australia
"Technically it is illegal to sell or rent X-rated material in all states of Australia[...]Ratings for the X18+ category were tightened in 2000 to ban material featuring some fetishes or which appeared to include minors. In 2007 the Howard Government made the possession of X18+ pornography illegal in some Aboriginal communities."
3rd highest rapes per capita.

Yeah well that link wolf posted in another thread basically said that if you're already prone to some level of sexual aggravation, pornography is likely to exacerbate it, however if you're not prone to sexual aggravation, it has little to no effect.
