Ok here is my situation.

I am doing B Science. Within it I am doing

Psychology 1A, Maths1131, Chinese Studies and COMP1011.

I have set out my courses in such a way so that I would meet all the pre-requisite's for B Computer Science, so that if I decide that I enjoy doing it, I can transfer into it and go straight to second year.

As a prerequisite, I also need to do Discrete maths, which I have planned to do in semester 2.

Thing is, is it possible to do discrete maths in the second year and not in semester 2 as I have originally planned and instead continue on with Psychology 1B, instead of dropping it due to having to pick up discrete maths? Because, I'm sure I will not be able to handle the work load of both discrete and maths 1B.

Thanks.

Sometimes faculties will let you do a prereq at the same time that you do a course that requires that prereq. Talk to people in the science faculty (they might send you to CSE).

im doing electrical now and am doing both MATH1131 as well as discrete MATH1090 and its not that bad, i find discrete easier than MATH1131.

However i heard that this is likely to be the last year that will have Discrete Math (My tutor in discrete said that this 'may' happen but unsure), so maybe the prerequisite will change for next year Comp Science.

Just to clarify, there are two discrete math courses.

MATH1081 - Discrete Maths (comp sci does this one)
MATH1090 - Discrete Maths for Electrical Engineers.

Which is more difficult you reckon?

edit: oh im not doing discrete till next semester, i swaped with another subject. :p Though semester 2 will suck with physics1131 1B, math1131 1B, discrete maths. Basically all math subjects except for computing :(

Discrete only goes for one semester and it is also available to do in the second semester so you don't need to do it in the summer holidays.

yeh but the thing is, well here is my plan for 1st yr

session1:-
ECON1101
ACCT1501
MATH1511
COMP1011

session2:-
ECON1201
ACCT1511
MATH1521
ACTL1001

the numbers could be wrong but you get the idea

and then for summer session over christmas i was going to do COMP1021
so that next year i can do the other comp sci courses...

now after hearing that i have to do discrete maths
i might as well leave both COMP1021 & Discrete maths till 2nd year session1!!!

my plan is to do actuarial and computer science...
good plan?? or bad?

hehe so i will be joining you rage for discrete next year :)

yr2 s1
ACTL2001
ACTL2002
discrete (no idea about the course code)
COMP1021

I only did 1081, but 1090 is meant to be harder (according to John Steele). For starters, 1090 is only a 3uoc (1081 is 6uoc) subject. It has less hours, but more content.

Discrete only goes for one semester and it is also available to do in the second semester so you don't need to do it in the summer holidays.
1081 is offered in sem 1 and sem 2. 1090 in sem 2 only. Neither seem to be offered in summer session.

If you are doing comp sci, the discrete you want is MATH1081.

My suggestion would be to not do "big" subjects outside of the normal session its run - like doing COMP1021 in session 1/summer session most probably means you're in a class of people that largely failed it the firs time around and need to do it again, but probably not an issue unless you're worried about it.

I'm going to dedicated the next few months trying to exploit the system to get out of discrete maths :D

um...if im meant to do MATH1081 why the heck did they put me in MATH1090? If u do MATH1090 will they overlook the fact that i need MATH1081 for comp science?

Also how did u guys find out what courses are offered in summer? i used the class search but it came up with nothing for MATH, PHYS and it gae me 2 weird courses for COMP but nothing relevant to comp science or elec engineering 1st year.

You do elec eng as well, so you'd need to do MATH1090. The two courses are excluding each other - if you've done MATH1090 its meant to be equivalent of doing MATH1081 (see the virtual handbook, the two courses exclude each other)

virtual handbook, class search.

i tryed both class seacrh and virtual handbook and no luck, the handbook gives info on 2004 summer courses and not 2005, while class search comes up with nothing. Do u think the class search thing has been updated for the summer courses in 2005?

where did u read that you can do this, i used class search and it didnt come up with COMP1021 for summer session, and using virtual handbook was also no help as it tell u there IS a Summer course for it in 2004 which is already done...no mention of 2005.

i wouldnt mind doing Comp1021 in summer if its at all possible, having people who had already done it and failed it could be an advantige since they can tell you whats coming up and hints/tricks that can help out heaps..Since im stuck with no computing courses this semester the only way i can do both 1A and 1B computing this year is to do that summer course which doesnt seem to be available.

I'm guessing it probably just hasn't been updated. If you email CSE, I'm sure they can tell you from experience whether a 2005 XA COMP1021 will happen. Even though EE lists COMP1021 for session 1 as well as XA I wouldn't rely on it; they're not the ones that run the course.

Don't be so sure about that one! I did ELEC1011 in second session last year, which is normally a session 1 subject - the lecturer was different, and the majority of the class were people that failed it the first time - its actually harder to get help from other students.

i had a talk with tim lambert and he told me that comp1021 is usually offered during the summer holiday

he wanted me to defer my commerce subjects so that i can do comp1021 in s2
he was going on about leaving computer for such a long time and then doing it next year isn't so good etc etc

i think if i was talking to a commerce lecturer they would say the same for commerce hehe

but yeh at the moment i think i might aswell leave it till next year....but comp1021 isn't that difficult so no point doing it in summer...
the only reason why i wanted to do it in the summer was so that i could do the other COMP courses next year but i'm not in a hurry...

right now i'm so confused as to how to plan out my degree.....so dam confusing
