you mean that speed travels at a constant speed in a vacumm?? well the symbol 'c'...means the speed of light which i assume everyone should know by now...and that Einstein stated that if one train was travelling at speed of light...and ur inside the train holding up the mirror, according to the special relativity, u should able to see you image while if the aether theory exist instead, you shouldn't see ur image...

i think thats why...i dunno, i'm dumb...and i think its in the jacaranda book as well...pg 82

its significant coz it means that time and space are relative concepts, if the speed of light is constant
changed the way man understand's space, and i think it explained the michelson morely experiment?

v=d/t right?
but if v=c and is always the same value, then as you get different values for d, t must change accordingly. And vice versa...
This gives rise to the time dilation etc... studied later in the topic.

St Patrick's Marist College in DUNDAS...dun bother looking up how my school went in the HSC, we didn't even make it in the top120 this yr...

you can also go to hsc-online and they list points relating to the syllabus, but for some reasons, i feel they didn't cover it really well and in details compare to my...(i dunno, maybe its my problem)?!?!

It comes down to the Lorentz Fitzgerald Equation:

Let T(v) be time in the moving frame as viewed by the outside frame (say on a moving train). Let T(0) be time in the outside frame (say on the platform)
then by Lorentz Fitzgerald equation:

T(v) = T(0) * sqrt (1 - (v^2 / c^2))
--------------------------------------------

If c is infinite then v^2/c^2 approximately = 0.
If v^2/c^2 = 0 then T(v) = T(0)
Hence the time on the train passes at the same rate as time on the platform. We have no relativity

If c is finite then v^2/c^2 is not = 0
then 1 - v^2/c^2 is not 1
then T(v) does not = T(0)
What has happened here???

Time on the platform is different from time on the moving train.
This is Einsteinian Relativity.

Corollary

T(v) =< T(0) i.e. the speed of time on the train always passes either slower or equal to the time outside. WHY??

The significance is IF speed of light is constant THEN space and time become relative quantities.

which leads to all the consequences and implications of special relativity.

in reality the speed of light isnt actually constant, its decaying, but the amount of decrease is not very significant to be considered.
