I'm currently studying e-learning at UTS and am wondering how many people would choose to study their HSC via e-learning? (online or otherwise).

What would be the benefits/drawbacks of this to you?

If definitely NOT for you, would you consider a blended mix of face to face (F2F) and virtual delivery?

Appreciate your input

I think this community is for me, what E-learning would be: revision. There's no way that I'd do my whole course on the internet, it just wouldn't stick. However, I am in favour of the concept of E-learning as a reinforcer.

I haven't heard of e-learning... it sounds like a good idea though, school is good for your social life but it's not actually that useful in terms of work - however for some subjects you do need an actual teacher. Maybe virtual delivery for science and maths and things, and face to face for music etc.

Mind you we could put a bit more effort into making school a more useful place to be... that way we wouldn't have to teach ourselves most of the time.

I'd prefer a mix of learning online & being in the classroom, simply because being in the classroom I can clarify things if I need to. But it is a great idea. ;)

Yeah but the thing about being in class is that the time is so often wasted by the teacher being late or having to wait for late students or forgetting to bring stuff or yelling at ppl to shut up... or just by a crap teacher generally, in which case the whole class is a waste of time and you might as well not turn up in the first place except to talk to your friends. Also, time at school is taken up with walking between classes and settling down and lunch and getting to and from school... if you look at it in terms of how much you actually learn, most of the time you spend at school would be better spent elsewhere. Unless of course you come to school to see ppl, which is cool.

Eww i hate the idea of e-learning. All those anti-social weirdo's would have just another reason to have less contact with real human beings.

Plus, half the fun of learning is being in a class with other ppl and having discussions, especially if you do humanities like me.

And i also hate the idea of computers taking over our lives. Its soo scary. I mean we could totally be faced with a i-robot situation. Ok i'll stop being a bimbo now. :p

Haha, good point. Don't bag technology tho, when you go into hospital with a life-threatening illness or injury, remember that without technology you wouldn't have survived past "oh my god you're bleeding!"

But as for being antisocial, it's pretty easy to be antisocial at school (trust me), so if you were doing e-learning it would be the same deal, right? You'd talk to your friends if you wanted to or you'd avoid ppl like the plague, just like in school.

Man I love the idea of having more time... I could so deal with a few hours of study a day, and then the rest of the day off to spend with friends or earning money...

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of school generally... :p
Good point, there are some huge time wasters at school. I didn't like primary school at all, but loved high school to bits :p How could I not? I wish I was back there sometimes I miss it. Ok call me a nerd..... :p

Man I wish I could go back to primary school! I didn't like it at the time (cos I don't like schools generally) but in retrospect it was cool... I guess high school isn't so bad - actually it would be great if we didn't have to do the stupid hsc thing... :p

Online students do better?

Thanks for your posts.
I do agree that you can't beat the social part of high school. I did, however, study certain subjects almost straight from the text.

Here's an interesting study I came across;

An experiment by California State University's Social Statistics department, where thirty-three students were randomly divided into two groups, each taught the same material, one by traditional (face to face) method, the other by online (virtual) delivery. Quantitative results demonstrated the students taught using the online method scored an average of 20% higher than the traditionally taught students. Furthermore the online students were also shown to have spent more time on peer contact and classwork.

We have e-learning at UWS, although its called webct. I don't like it at all. The only good thing about it, is some subjects have discussion boards and chatrooms - which makes it easier for students to communicate (especially when at uni, when everyone lives so far away from each other). The problem I have with webct, is that if lectures go up, it puts me off going to class.

I don't think it would be a good idea for the HSC though. Nothing can beat face to face learning and the social side of school. But I guess everyones different, it would suit some people more than others.

going to school an attending class was basically the only motivation i got to do work during the HSC ... e-learning would have screwed me up cause i know i can just access it online at anytime, hence i'll keep putting off study.

Isn't Boredofstudies E-Learning?

E-learning is defined as:
The delivery of formal and informal learning and training activities, processes, communities and events via the use of all electronic media like Internet, intranet, extranet, CD-ROM, video tape, DVD, TV, cell phones, personal organizers etc...

informal...community....via the internet...
Hmmm...Isn't Boredofstudies a form of E-Learning? It is a community based around learning (even if sometimes it seems that not a whole lot is happening).

Studying in a group can be more beneficial than solo because you can clarify concepts and get new insight. How many people actually use Boredofstudies as part of their regular study time? Swapping notes etc... You still get the benefits of socialising and F2F contact during the school day, but when you arrive home it's nice to know there are thousands of others out there who are trying to study the exact same thing you are, possibly having trouble grasping the same concept as well.

I guess I'm a little jealous something like boredofstudies wasn't around when I was in yr12.
