I have had a think about this for a while and it is obviously pretty easy because the book and lecture slides don't bother to really explain it but I can't seem to see where they get the answer from. I would ask my lecturer but I won't see him for a week and I really want to know.

I understand everything except for why z(0.025) = 1.96?The probability that z falls between -z(α/2) and +z(α/2) is equal to 1 - α. For example, when 1 - α = 0.95, we have z(α/2) = z(0.025) = 1.96.
