i'm confused about 3)c. what are the 'population means' the question is referring to?

so those periods are samples? but shouldn't there only be one population mean, so why is it a plural?

It means population mean within each period. It is a pop mean but this mean differs for different periods of the population data.

ah, ok, thanks. but what is the sample mean we use when constructing the confidence interval? is it the same as the pop mean in each period?

Yes. For 10 characters; that's what i used

Edit- oh and my q1 and 2 answers are the same as yours 14people (whatever your name is :) ) and I even used a different method for variance in q2.

Why is one on average so much less than the other?

for Question 1 (Yes, I'm just starting ;)) where it says 'Excel NORMDIST function' does that mean using PhStat or...???? I know someone else asked this same question but it doesn't seem to have been answered :)

NORMDIST fuction has nothing to do with phstat. its a general function of excel.

it can be found in the same way as other function such as sum, max, min, mean, mode etc.

In 2(a), in your first table, you seem to have a count of only 11. I'm pretty sure there should be 12 items in there. Just check that again?
