what does every1 think about econometrics at unsw?? i want to major in it for BEc/BA or something like that..
Do any of u do it? what's it like? Do u like it? what type of person is it suitable for? Is UNSW a good uni for it? if not which one is?

haha it a real bitch to do, im doing econometric methods right now, which i think chris is as well.

its compulsory to complete for an economics or econometrics major.

if you like introductory econometrics then continue with it. if you dont like it...do it as a minor or something.

and in regards to whether it is good. im not too sure. usyd, unsw and anu should be good for it.

+1 for econometrics methods as well (pure econ major, doing core metrics courses)

Metrics seems to be more about understanding and interpreting statistical models rather than number crunching and stuff. Far more analysis than I expected, far less "math" than I expected, in the 2 introductory courses anyway.

Honestly the intro metrics course (econ2206) was pretty dry, as all you learn is technical skills (heteroskedasticity, misspecification issues, etc) but imo it's super easy and a pretty awesome WAM booster. The course I'm doing now (methods - econ2207) is much harder, but more interesting I think. It seems to be more about developing your way of thinking as a proper econometrician rather than telling you "this is how you do a regression, this is how to test for omitted variable bias". Very different from any of my other courses.

If you like analysis you might like it, I dunno.

We really can't answer the last question as we're all biased. (endogenous selection ololol!!)

hmmm yer there is a bachelor of statistics at ANU that sound really good. u can choose to do econometrics, or specialise in other statistical electives like 'business statistics', 'psychological research methods' or 'sociological research methods'.
Sounds pretty interseting aye? and the UAI is only 75.00, reduced dramatically from 90 in 2008. anyone happen to kno y its gone done so muchh? and do u rekn this degree wil have good job prospects? cz it sounds really good bcz u can take subs from across the campus rather than being restricted to one specific area.

and bak to econometrics.. it sound really boring now after reading wat most u guys said.. im thinking of majoring in it.. lol.. as myh careers advisor suggested it to me as am good at maths and economics..

ive been looking for someone like u, who is doing this course.
i have put down BCOM/BEC at UNSW in my uac application, i think i put it down second, but i may change it to 1st.
anyway does econometrics involve a lot of math n statistics? its not as dull as evri1 says is it?
how r ur commerce majors going? is accounting good? i did accounting at TAFE, i liked the manual stuff, what is it like at uni? and how is finance??

it's statistics for economists. i find it interesting.

finance/metrics relate together for my subjects and i find both interesting

BEc/BA is 91.00 at new south..

It seems like there is a lot of negativity on econometrics. My careers advisor insisted on doing econometrics if you majoring in economics. Is this good advice?

At unsw if you major in Economics you're required to take 2 econometric courses (plus the basic first year stats stuff).

If you're serious about econ learning about regression analysis (the stuff you learn in the 2 metrics courses) really does come in handy when you read academic papers. Like in Development Econ class we get heaps of readings, and there's a few papers structured like the following:

1. Introduction
2. Brief overview of theory
3. Regression analysis (simple linear, 2 stage ordinary least squares, non-linear)
4. Discussion of results
5. Conclusion

I found knowing at least the basics of metrics really does help, but by no means required. Honestly you can write a high quality econ thesis paper without the slightest bit of statistical knowledge.
