For a heavy-ish 2.0 litre 4 cylinder car, what are good rev ranges?

Usually I rev up to about 2.5 - 2700 before I change gears on the flat, and try and cruise on about 1.8.

This means that I'm usually sitting in 5th gear at 50km/h. Am I saving petrol or damaging my car, or both?

personally i dont care. the savings are going to be so marginal. i think its worth paying an extra ~$5 a week to not worry about it and just rev ur car how u want.

lol
i tend to stay between 2000-3000 revs, so once i hit 70km/hr and 3000 revs, i use OD to bring it back down
dont have it too low though...thats just as bad as having high revs

For me...

a) Don't rev the engine hard upon start up and don't turn a/c on when engine still cold

b) Under normal suburban driving, lightly throttle and keep engine between 1000 and 2500rpm

c) Always try to keep the pedal at a consistent angle rather than constantly pushing down, letting go, pushing down, etc... may not go in huge acceleration, but saves fuel and you don't need to slam on the brakes so hard if you aren't so close to the car in front

d) If I can see lights are red up ahead, rather than keep accelerating and braking; just lightly let go off the accelerator and if necessary, touch the brakes slightly. This way I'm braking earlier, but if the lights turn green, then I just go back to the accelerator without having to launch the car from a standstill had I driven up to the lights at speed limit, stopped to 0, and then had to start up to 50 again.

e) Cruise control on motorways/freeways

f) When stopped for a while, shift to neutral (I'm in an auto).

I do this so that I can get more mileage out of my car and save myself from having to put petrol more than once a week. More convenient for me too. Of course when the situation demands it, I accelerate... and I'm always at the speed limit. Just sometimes takes me a bit longer to reach it :) ... never had any issues with tail gating though except this one time where some overanxious mother in a van was tailing me.

EDIT: Today an R33 GTR in Chatswood overtook me and kept max-throttle at every traffic light. Poor guy must've wasted so much fuel and took quite a few risky lane changes between Chatswood and Macquarie Centre on Epping Road... and he didn't even end up in front of me since when I went to turn right off Epping Road, I picked the very right lane and got through the lights before he did.

Often if you go in a higher gear you have to use way more throttle and don't save that much fuel at all. Cruising should be around 2-2.5

Edit: Also my mates and I had the sickest "race" tonight. Off the lights, me and Julian in the R32 in one lane and Attila and Rahul in the 300Zx in the other. Both massive wheelspin, shift in to second, wheels still spinning upto about 60-70 and then chill the fuck out. Was crazy.

5th gear at 50 0_o wtf is wrong with you?

i go like this 1st gear till whenever, maybe 25-30
2nd gear till 60
3rd gear till 100
4th gear from 100-110

when cruising, 3rd gear up till 60, at 60 i sit in 4th gear, 5th gear at 70km and over. I like to be able to accelerate in a pinch if i need to overtake or something.

a susuki chino, so its a tiny little car. I have no idea what revs iam doing cause it doesnt have a tacometer, but its how every1 in my family drives it. If i used 5th gear at 70 to accelerate up to 110 it would take forever, and would be impossible on the slightest of inclines.

Lol I remember reading about this, I find it hard to believe it does anything... the RPM stays exactly the same in neutral or drive so how can it be using less fuel!?!?

In drive it is just turning the torque converter over, puts more load on the parts such as drivetrain and brakes uncessarily. I'm not sure about fuel economy though because my Camry actually idles high (very marginally) in neutral. Also, the camry has a 4 speed, does over 100 in second :p My friends R32 which I was driving on monday night (he was drunk, lol) redlines at 55, 90, 140 and don't know about 4th and 5th, but 180km/h in 5th was 5000rpm, and it got a 7000rpm redline, fuel cut at 7500.

Also, I didn't do 180 on a cold rainy night in Sydney, it was on the highway out past bathurst.

I dont think there's such thing as "normal".. depends on each car's specs..

My Euro:

For 3rd gear and 100kmh, mine revs between 3500-4000.. 4000 when you're still accelerating, and 3500 when you take your foot off.

My redline is at 7000.

Fuel cutoff should be around 7500.. I took it to 7200 once and it was still fine..
