I dont udnerstand something. The "B Eng, B Scie (elect Eng)" has a cut off of about 83. Now if i want to major in comp science for the science part, i need a UAI of 90 (even though comp science degree alone has a UAI of ~84). Why is that?

i.e...
B eng (elect) = 80.0
B Comp Science = ~84
B Eng, B Scie = ~ 83
B Eng, B Comp science = 90!! :(

Is it possible to later on transfer to elect eng/Comp scie double degree if i start with elect engineering alone? If so what type of average do i need to maintain (my UAI = 82)?

Thanks. :)

When I was at info day, I looked at the 2004 prospectus and I remember seeing the b eng/b sci cut off as 80!?

It is possible to transfer - look for at least credit average. Even at info day some of the academic staff were unsure of the transfer procedures because they were being changed. It used to be that if you were transferring within the same school - you only needed school approval. Now there is talk of needing to reapply through UAC.

This UAI discrepency is getting confusing for me as well. I suggest you call CSE and get it sorted out - it'll be straight from the horse's mouth that way!

yeah on that info day the 2004 prospectus says "For entry in the year 2003, admission to the BE BSc (Computer Science) is available to students who have a UAI of 80.1 or greater"

on the UNSW website it states "For entry in the year 2004, admission to the BE BSc (Computer Science) is available to students who have a UAI of 90 or greater"

notice while it is "2004 pospectus" its refering to students entering in 2003, while the website refers to students entering in 2004 (which is us), so my id say its 90. I just wonder how flexible this figure is, i hope i can get in with my 89.3

Well for B eng, B Scie, the UAI for 2004 has increased to 83 (according to that PDF file released). But why combining Comp science is = 90, i dont understand? But then, comp science alone is ~84. :(

i really dont know, i think when u get into the course b eng b science, you then choose what engineering and what science within the uni, dont you. So u can convince them to let you in, that 90 was made up by UNSW so i guess if you talked to them they may be nice and adjust the figure, well i hope thats true cause its my only hope..

to maintain a double degree you have to have credit average or so i read somewhere, so maybe they assume students with 80, 82 and dat are ok for a single degree, but to get credit average maybe they are guesing only students with 90+ are likely to get credit average.. i am just guessing here..i will call them once i get offer and ask for details then.

Yeh thats what i was thinking too but then again, the double degree (eng/scie) should = 90 too. If you decide to call them, post what they say if you can. :)

wats going on??

im enrolling in telecommunications/science, which is program 3641, which falls under the bachelor of engineering/science combined degree. i thought that once u have chosen that degree, bachelor of engineering/b science, you then inform the uni on enrollment that you want to major in telecommunications engineering and computer science as the engineering and science majors and that all u needed to do was obtain a uai of 83 or over(for this year). i obtained a uai of greater than 83 and i got accepted for that degree.....but now im getting confused about this uai of 90 thing?? where did it come from?? all u needed was 83 or over and u can get into ur engineering course and computer science course....wats going on??

hey! this is my first post on BOS

I'm doing BE Elec / BSc first year as well and intend to do Computer Science as my BSc major. I don't think the UAI cut-offs really means much after we got offered this course. We only choose the science plan after year 1 or so and by that time I doubt UAI of ours in 2003 matters much. I heard this morning in G25 that even if someone is doing single degree he/she can transfer into a combined degree (maybe not with law) in year 2 and so on. They mention considerations are giving based on the average mark we get in year 1 or something. So I think that if you get high average marks you probably don't need 90+ UAI to do BEng/ COmputer science.

BTW if you were part of today's scavenger hunt, do you know the capacity of CLB? I don't.

hey there gman03, im doing exact same thing as you (elec eng/ science(plan on comp science), its seems the 90 thing is pointless really since we only needed 82 or so to get in, the catch is we must get 65% average to stay in the course, if we dont make that we must drop something.

also what is this scavenger hunt, i went yesterday to eng lecture with friends who were from other unis, so when the yellow shirts tryed that 'name game' my friends cleared out of there pulling me me with them. did u guys meet your mentor or what.

Thanks thekey for verifying about I thought i heard on thursday! The scavenger hunt wasnt a big deal anyway (it was actually a boring mini campus tour). We were told to six locations around the campus to get some clues and solve the answer, which are somewhat related to the campus. Yeah they assigned me a mentor just before the hunt began .. anyway one group solved all the clues and got books voucher.

oh damn, i really wanted that mentor :(. I prolly should have stayed thre but the comp science lecture was also strating within 10min of the end of that electrical one. but dont worry about that one, it was just this hippie lookin teacher taking a stand against bill gates and micosoft.

the only important info there was 1year = simple stuff with few hundred of lines of code, 2ndyear = thousands lines of code (not writing it all, but knowing how to read it or somemthing)...
