I know that engineering is a very safe occupation. However I was looking at a government publication and I noticed that Chemical and Materials Science Engineering professionals get paid only $$$ out of $$$$$ which translates to $1081 to $1300 pw. But according to the Engineering Australia website they get paid as one of the most. Can someone please explain this.

There is no such thing as a "safe" career. True, some are better than others, but you wont waltz from uni straight into a job. You will need to work hard at personal/career development at uni if you want that to translate to a job.
