I don't understand how schools mark english advanced papers? My eng adv cohort avg for Mod B essay was a 9/20? I don't think the test was that hard but my results weren't that great either. I hear from other schools their average is way higher than a 9/20, but I don't think my cohort isn't that bad at english adv? I don't really understand how I can achieve a band 6 in English adv atp???

Dw average for Mod B at my school was like 10/20 lol. I think it's cause most schools don't have an internal for mod b before trials. You can still band 6 if your rank is high and you do well in the HSC.

the thing is some schools have really really harsh english faculties and your school just might be one of them, i think if you wanna b6 see what the top kids did well, understand what the rubric wants you to do, start writing your essays early and regularly seek feedback from your teachers (i'd argue teacher feedback is most important for eng if you wanna improve), and if your teachers don't give feedback, ask ppl who are good at eng

It depends on your school, the type of assignments and their marking standards. Some schools are pretty strict and have very high standards, especially selective schools. My school for example always treated it like the end of the world when the cohort average for every assessment was around 13-14/20. The 9/20 is a little strange but if your school isn't a "good" one with a particularly weak academic cohort I wouldn't be surprised. OR your school is just very strict. What did your cohort general feedback say? Or even just look at your own feedback - what are the major things you need to work on?

My advice for you for English is that you should always listen to your teachers in terms of what they want for the nitty gritty details of English (e.g. do they want you to structure X this way? Do they want you to integrate Y here?), because they will be marking your papers for most of your internal English assessments and thus determining your rank for the HSC year. The HSC is a year from now for you but the English markers acknowledge that faculties and schools are different across the state so they will be much more lenient. Make sure to also go beyond what your teachers are teaching for English - do extra research for your text, consult exemplars - especially those from your school who got Band 6 - and critical articles.

Your english cohort is worse than mine. I'm just hoping I get a band 4.

bye don't worry it was the same for my cohort last year as well; i got like 15/20 and i didn't prepare anything special and bsed my way through the test. i think there are idiots like mr project academy (15/40, 7 on saq, 8 on essay pretty sure) who just don't do anything/suck at time management & thus drag down the average so w/o them the avg is more likely a 11 or 12

me finding the '22 dux on here so i could ask if anyone did work on english in his cohort just for him to say that no one, not even him, did work on english 🤧🤧
they never really gave good advice; maybe i fell asleep during all the parts where they did but also i remember reading stuff about cohort feedback and thinking "oh shit ive done nothing they wanted" just to still get an 18

LOL I suppose it's different across all schools because in mine I felt like I had to fight in the trenches to stay in the top 10. It doesn't hurt to put in extra effort because that can be the difference between an 18 and a 20 if you want that differentiator
