I got 3rd in the year with 92% in the yearlies in yr 10 at newington college

Go forward to now and im ranked 91/100 in advanced getting 52% in our exam with a 5/20 for my othello essay. I can drop to standard or stay in advanced.

I dont know what to do? Im leaning towards standard but im still undecided

What are the advantages/disadvantages of me choosing:

Advanced

Standard

I dropped from Advanced to Standard at the end of prelim. Worst mistake I ever made. Have you tried getting any outside help? (e.g. a tutor)

Advanced. Shakespeare isn't THAT gay. Plus, it's so much easier to pick up techniques in his plays, and the whole notion of 'drama' and 'tragedy'. His texts are a classic.

The advanced syllabus is fun. ;) (LOL, other people might think NOT, but it's true, it's really interesting... if you're going to be forced to do Eng., you might as well do something you won't die over)

No, but it is gay. I think i've had a stronger dislike towards it because of my teacher but mainly because i just DO NOT like Shakespeare. Our teacher was pretty unorganised when we were studying this module and many of us hadn't even finished reading and studying the play when assessment time came. Oh well it's all over now and i did well so meh :)

English Standard.

+ No Shakespeare required.

- Poor performing people.
Not all are, but most of them.

To the OP, I am in the exact same boat as you 9x/105. I bombed out in the first assessment task getting only 5/15, 33%. Slowly the marks risen to 80% then dropped again :( I just did my Yearlies, I hope I did decent as I did put in some effort... Anyway, I hope my Yearlies mark will convince them to not kick me to Standard course. Just work hard during the 2 week holidays and improve on your skills

It is highly impossible to get a band 6 in standard English, so if you are looking for a HIGH UAI, then i suggest you do advanced eng and just work really hard in it
bhut stanrad cousre is a lot easier to comprehend and articualte in your essays.

i dont regret dropping to standard in fact i think it is the best decision i ever made. im not worried about the impact of standard on my UAI because just as previous posters have said, u can get a high UAI still.

just ask urself. would u prefer to do adv, have all the stress and worry and get a low mark/rank or would u prefer to do std, have less stress and get a great mark/rank. personally i choose std and im coming like tie first or something my teacher said and my stress levels have been drastically lower this year than last yr.

anyway its ur choice - just think would u prefer to be bottom of adv or blitz standard. - dropping to std gives u an added advantage over the others - u just have to ace the AOS paper and u can get a high uai.

i recommend staying in advanced. If you were capable of getting such good marks in year 10, then surely if you study harder you can get back to or close to that level again.
i've been told that it is impossible to get a band 6 in standard, I don't know if that's true or if that's just what our teachers told us so that we would stay in advanced.
I think the workload is more challenging in advanced but you can gain alot out of it.
at the start of this year alot of people from advanced dropped down to standard and although they say the work is alot easier, quite a few regret not staying in advanced.

it's really up to you and how much work you are willing to put in to english.

No, its not TOTALLY impossible, but it is just really really hard to get a Band 6 in Standard. The whole myth about Standard scaling heaps down is not exactly true. The idea is that people who are decent in English tend to do Advance leaving the so called 'poor performing group' in Standard. When it comes to HSC time, the marks between Advance and Standard are compared on a common scale, since the people in Standard tend to perform poorer, their marks are then scaled down. But in the end, it all comes down to effort and hard work.

im doing standard and i dont regret or feel disadvantaged. ive noticed taht for adv students, alotta dedication and time is put in to it compared to std, the concepts in std are straightforward and you dont haveto put as much of an effort to do reasonably well. Easy is not the right word to use here, but yeah if i had the choice id go with standard, im happy with band 5...like it feels good int aht i know half of the adv students are bound to get a band 5 like mine, yet im certain that i got it the easy way...band 6 is nto impossible, the most number of std students who received a band 6 in one year was i think 7? its not entirely 'impossible' but your chances are very slim, if youre happy to get a band 5 for it then id say standard is good, but ify ou want band 6 then adv may be the better option

if i aim for a 90 in ecos/bs/bio and to get 80+ for my extension maths what would be a better option for me

I did pretty well in these subjects whem i pumped out effort but do you think i can get those 90's if i do advanced english and have to do heaps of work to do well in it? If i choose standard, does that mean i can do barely any work and get band 5 or is there a need for dedication to get it

Overall, what do you think is more work for me

to get a band 5 in standard or in advanced?

well you gotta put SOME effort, but its better in that you can put more emphasis on your other subjects so yeah, it creates time and space

A lot of people (particularly at my former school) found Advanced really hard. However, that wasn't because the content was hard, it was because the teachers were really crap. They didn't understand some of the course themselves and tended to lead students in the wrong direction. They emphasised so much on the structural components of their responses (such as spelling/punctuation/grammar, linking texts, synthesis, formality of language etc) that there wasn't much room left to focus on the content which really matters.

I found it quite shocking, that I somehow understood some of the Advanced concepts better than some of the Advanced people did when I was reading the stuff they had to do. For example, a lot of them didn't even realise the importance of explaining their texts in terms of their contexts. Seriously, most of them were like half lost in class (and that's not only the students!).

On the other hand Standard is ridiculously easy (though some teachers somewhat think otherwise). Band 6 should be quite accessible. I mean, I got away with a high band 5 after really screwing up my Paper 1 and bludging half the time. But then again, this is coming from someone who was like average in Year 10 (mid-band 5), and then was in the top 5 in Year 11 and 12.... :p

My problem is that my advanced teacher is crap and the only way to change teachers for me is to go up.

I need to see the head of english who is unlikely to move me up unless in extremely exceptional circumstances:

My argument is that i was originally in the 'c' class and then randomly, i was put down to d at the start of the year, this was unfair and has been detrimental to my learning and this should be corrected by putting me back into c.

I too have a shit teacher, we were told transformations was the transformations of characters in Hamlet and R+G, when in fact it was the transformations between the two texts.

If you're aiming for a band 6 in english bear in mind that there generally aren't any given out, as the Board think if you can achieve a band 6 in standard you should be doing a harder course.

im currently stuck in this thought also, im pretty sure i can convince my teacher and get into advance.
But the problem i have is i make grammar errors, i tend to leave out words etc. i dunno how bad this will effect my essays.
And seeing i dun really need any shakespeare and the english in my future career i guess doing standard wont be that bad eh?

Also at my yearlies i got about like 14 or 15 out of 20 for my 3 essays so i did ok for that. However my english skills exams i screwed up in a way. In the end i got 60% and the required pass mark for advance is 70%. Hmm so what should do?
