i dont regret dropping to standard in fact i think it is the best decision i ever made. im not worried about the impact of standard on my UAI because just as previous posters have said, u can get a high UAI still.

just ask urself. would u prefer to do adv, have all the stress and worry and get a low mark/rank or would u prefer to do std, have less stress and get a great mark/rank. personally i choose std and im coming like tie first or something my teacher said and my stress levels have been drastically lower this year than last yr.

anyway its ur choice - just think would u prefer to be bottom of adv or blitz standard. - dropping to std gives u an added advantage over the others - u just have to ace the AOS paper and u can get a high uai.
So true.

Greetings "little ones"..haha..jokes. I just wanna say if you want to do well in the hsc, all you need to do is watch one hour porn a day (according to the law of Riverism)

thanks for that. Lol.

but seriously, only drop to standard if you're coming bottom of advanced. if you're just lazy, stay with advanced. standard does not do so well in the scaling process also.

hi guys! im in a similar situation as the o.p... im coming about 6th in the year with about 72% from yearlies.. top mark being 80% (only about 35 people do it) !!!

My teacher told us that we are performing at the level of a "extremely well standard" class, but fairly poor for an advance group. My teacher suggested the cut off mark to be 72% and anyone below it should not consider advance at all =| I just barely made it.. and im having a hard time deciding what i should do for next year.

My schools a public school (as you probably have already guessed xD) probably sitting around the 200th ish or so ranking.. what do you think i should do? Do you think that a 72 (ish) assesment mark for school would get past a band 4 in the hsc? becuase im really worried about the actual hsc mark being much lower than what im getting for school since its a public school. Would i be better off doing standard?

Thanks guys!

You are doing well - stick with Advanced. I have heard that you cannot get band 6 in standard - as in - you are literally not allowed to if your are in standard. Advanced gives you a better education and is more interesting. Good luck.

I think you should stick with Advanced. I am in about the same situation 9th at 71% for half yearlies in a public school. I am going to do Adv - also our school sets really hard tests so we don't get complacent. And u will do better next year because u have more preparation time etc. At the beginning of the yr the teachers were really discouraging students from choosing Adv. Don't be oo influenced by what they say. Btw what did you get in the school certificate for English? - it should give an indication of your potential ability. If you got in band 4 then I would go to standard - probably if you got less than 83 in sc I would be in standard. Good luck.

thanks! i gotta make my decision by tonight T_T
hmm.. i got exactly 83 for english for school cert haha!
my teacehrs actually encouraging me to do adv because she thinks i can work much harder. Shes predicting that i can work and get maybe 82+ in the hsc. Im basically the only one telling myself to go to standard, my main reason being that i think that our expectation of an adv kid is high at all (ie. most of them should actually be doign standard).

im still unsure what to do =[ but im leaning towards advance at the moment.
thanks guys!
She is trying to make a relationship between sc and hsc? That's pretty idiotic. SC doesn't hold much relevance as to what you can expect to get in HSC if any. My friend got 96 for English in SC and got Band 5 in HSC. Am I just providing you with an extreme example, I don't think so. There are tonnes of cases where SC result doesn't coincide with your future HSC result.

If you like English and like the texts that you will be learning in advanced, go for it. If you don't, meh, why not standard? it has got same scaling...

You can even do Extension 1 English if you are really up for it. Believe in yourself. Good luck, I hope that helped.

Oh! i just mentioned my SC mark for the poster above me, its got nothing to do with my teachers prediction. She just thinks i can move up about at least 10 in my mark (from 72-82) if i work harder.. =| I think im gonna end up doing advance because its a smaller and a much more competetive group of students ( approx 9) so i think i will perform better in that.

Will the hsc markers sorta take into account that..you could better than some standard students even if you do poorly in advanced?

I got 3rd in the year with 92% in the yearlies in yr 10 at newington college

Go forward to now and im ranked 91/100 in advanced getting 52% in our exam with a 5/20 for my othello essay. I can drop to standard or stay in advanced.

I dont know what to do? Im leaning towards standard but im still undecided

What are the advantages/disadvantages of me choosing:

Advanced

Standard
I honestly think you should stay in advanced just hang in there! its worth it because even if you do really good in standard the scaling is still not as high as advanced and in the end your marks might b dragged down. Don't give up just yet!! I totally understand your feelings about the marks but dont worry you still have year 12!! just hang in there!

I didn't say that the school certificate can tell you what you will get in the hsc. I agree that there are tonnes of cases where sc result doesn't coincide with hsc result. But I wanted to get an idea of where she is at. How do I know whether she is a total dumbo or not. I think that english sc can give me a general idea. Btw there is a differennce in scaling etc because my teacher said that standard students are not allowe to get a band 6- not sure if it is true and I think that would be stupid but you never know.

dude, do advanced. I am 100% certain about that.
to help, maybe i can tell you a little about me ?

in year 10 i was top 20 or so student in english at my school. infact, i was concitently around 15th from year 7 to year 10. Year 11 came along and i came 80th/110~ ( i know it isnt as low as urs but maybe this can help somewhat). At no stage did i concider standard english.. like i didnt even think about it.

teachers thought i wsnt cabable of advanced... similar to you my yearly (yes it was othello too... must be something bout it) i failed big time and the teacher told me it was so bad it wsnt funny.

Forward to today. i can 6th out of 113 students in english advanced. i am now looking at a high band 5/low band 6. i dno what it was which improved me so much... jut hard work, focus and desire.

im not saying this will be you, nor am i saying wat i did was amazing - what i am trying to say that even if you performed poorly in one year (year 11) do not take it as something which should make you drop adv.

i think also being in a tougher course with smarter students will help with other subjects. specially the essay writting ones. my language skills and knowledge has helped me so much for my essay writing skills in subjects such as economics.

if i were you id do adv, no questions asked.
