I'm just wondering if this is allowed...

We were given an inclass essay (with 2-3 weeks time to prepare) on the Exchange Rate... We haven't even studied that chapter yet...

I don't care really, since the essay itself was easy, as with that chapter, but are teachers allowed to give you essays on an area you haven't studied (knowing the question, of course)?

it'll probably help you if anything because by the time you do study it in class it will be revision, so you should be able to understand it better. also, that is like the easiest topic ever and should be very easy to learn from the text book

Get used to this, often you will be given assignments long before you have started the content they are based on in class, most of the time you hand in the assignment around the same time you are just finishing the topic.
