OK i can't get the answer to this question:
an ester can be formed by reacting butanoic acid with propanol. What is the condesned structural formual and name of the ester. I understand how do get the name but can't get the structural formula.

you draw the butanioic acid and propanol, then the OH from the butanoic acid reacts with the OH of the propanol, creating a water molecule and linking the others with an oxygen.

C-C-C-C*-O-C-C-C
With hydrogens filling the spaces and a double bonded O of the c*

the products are propyl butanoate and water...structural formula?

1. draw the "coo" functional group.
2. ON THE OXYGEN WITH SINGLE BOND WITH THE CARBON, attach a propyl group (propane with end hydrogen removed)
3. on the other side of the carbon (the one that was in the functional group) draw a butyl group which incorporates the carbon of the functional group...

the ester formed is: propyl butanoate

okay... let's do some drawing...

CH3CH2CH2C=O
___________-OH (my butanoic acid)

CH3CH2CH2-O-H (my 1-propanol)

now here is the combined products:

CH3CH2C=O
________-O-CH2CH2CH3 (my propyl butanoate)

notice how the left side is the butanoic acid bit and the right hand side is the propanol bit (flipped around)... btw, interesting sidenote, water is also produced in esterification, -OH of the acid combines with H- from the alkanol to become H2O.
